Growing up with only a mother was never easy, but she gave it and still gives it her all to make sure I have the same opportunities as any other kid. Being biracial in a predominantly white town has always been a struggle, never quite fully fitting in. There are many things that have molded me into the person I am today such as being born into a family with four children. With three siblings, I have been forced to be able to work out problems from stealing each other’s toys to having to rush to the emergency room to get stiches because my brother chased me around the house and I tripped. My mother, father, brother, and two sisters were all born in Pennsylvania and I am the odd ball and I was born in Adrian, Michigan. From when I was a child I always loved being involved with sports because of my competitive nature. Throughout life, we all have things that can be used to describe us from our birth to the present. One quote that describes my life is by Maya Angelou, a powerful feminist and poet, in it she states, “I am a Woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal Woman, that’s me.” It shows that I am an intelligent, persevering, and vocal women in society. In life, so far I only have a few stages under my belt, like from childhood, preteen years, and teenage years. Through these periods in my life I have become a vibrant, focused, and independent woman.
When I first moved to America I did not speak to anyone in my class for an entire year. I was simply too afraid. Although I slowly began to break out of my shell, the process was long and painful. Every time someone bullied me about my accent or ethnicity, I retreated back into my circle and hid away. In order to be who I am today I had to spend a lot of time self-motivating myself.Today, I am the person who I am proud to be. I am a strong and confident individual that welcomes challenges. The journey, the hardships, and racism that I went through, throughout my life have shaped me into a strong individual.
Given her background, being a woman and African American, she was often disapproved of and criticized all her life. Despite this fact, she stood tall and fearless against the criticism because that’s what she had to do to stand out and make a difference. Within my fifteen and a half years of living, I have experienced many heart wrenching moments that have changed who I am, so many that I stopped trying to keep count long ago. Like most teenagers, the past couple of years have been some of the most confusing, hectic years of my life. I'm at that age I'm trying to figure out who I am, as well as who I want to become. The protagonist Cora, brought together two different worlds with her unique character. She does this by let herself fall in love with a white man, which is not acceptable in this time, but she did it; and she has a beautiful baby from this decision. Her character is very independent, she chooses her own path. Cora doesn’t care what anyone else thinks about her choices because they are her own. She is proud and unashamed of everything she's accomplished in her life, not regretting anything.
The story about I Martranika Gross, called changing my life. It all begin with many ideals that I had in mind to become while changing my life so my daughter will fix in. First was continue my education at Strayer University and a journey to follow. Becoming a mom at sixteen was the hardest thing I have ever done. Trying to work, go to school and take care of my daughter seemed impossible. My mom was always there to support me, but from the moment I found out I was pregnant I was determined to do it on my own. When you become a mom at sixteen the paths you can take in life change, and you are no longer a teenage you become an adult really fast.
What could have been of my parents if I wasn’t here? The day in which my first breath could have been my last one. The first perception that I had of a home was the hospital located in the Cowboy’s city. When I got better, we moved to an apartment that was small like a shoe box. In my 4th month of being born we moved to Houston, which was like a different world. My childhood years consisted of a lot of moving, but I remember that there was always a smile on our face.
I never really thought about where my life was going. I always believed life took me where I wanted to go, I never thought that I was the one who took myself were I wanted to go. Once I entered high school I changed the way I thought. This is why I chose to go to college. I believe that college will give me the keys to unlock the doors of life. This way I can choose for myself where I go instead of someone choosing for me.
