Ed learns to face all of his fears, and he was able to rise above his feelings of incompetence as he helps others in areas where they need the most help in. Some of the messages that Ed receive are as simple, for example, buying an ice cream cone for a single mother, a church that needs congregation, but others put Ed in real danger. Ed’s last message, delivered on the joker card, it's for Ed himself. During the delivery of this message, Ed realized that “he was not the messenger, but rather he was the message itself.”( Zusak, p. 357). This quote shows that even ordinary ones, can rise about their perceived ability to make a difference in the world. It is a Tuesday night in San Marcos Texas, it is a bit chilly outside as I walk up and down the square looking for a section of bars I can observe. As I walked East on Hopkins street I stumbled upon two bars, Harpers Brick Oven Sports Pub and The Porch. Both bars were packed with what looked like a mix of native San Marcos residents, and college students. These two bars shed light on what the square is; a welcoming place with a carefree atmosphere for all people who call San Marcos home to enjoy.

Ed gave the card his all and truly worked toward understanding these people’s situations and enhancing their lives. The aces have given Ed a purpose in life, something to wake up to in the morning, and Ed feels proud and confident after achieving his missions. After finishing all three missions, Ed reflects on his experience and current thoughts, “Later that night I look in the bathroom mirror. Two black eyes. Swollen jaw. A blood stream flowing to my throat… Well done, Ed, I tell myself, and I stare for a final few seconds at my broken and bloodied face”(180). Ed would have never expected to feel this way but he can finally say that he has “done something” with his life and has truly made a difference. The artifact that I chose is my guitar. Originally I wanted to just choose music in general as my artifact as I also play the piano and am in choir but i finally decided on my guitar specifically because it is what really pulled me into and got me interested in music beyond just listening to it. It is what helped me develop as a musician.

I covered the comforter over my head to try to block out the loud music coming from the living room. I wasn’t tired but mommy told me to stay in my room so sleep seemed like my only option. Brittney tossed and turned in the bunk above me and Michelle snored in the bottom bunk bed on the opposite side of the room. Rayvaun got up and went into the living room. Told us to stay in the room but he gets away with everything because he is the only boy. We are the same age but that doesn’t count for anything. Even though I couldn’t leave the room he left the door open wide enough for me to listen in on what was going on.
It was about 8:00 at night, my heart was pounding, my breathing became irregular, uncontrollable tears slid down my face. I felt the warm tears just dropping onto my hands. I walked into the bathroom, getting ready to shower. I slowly turned my head, up, down, left, and right. I didn’t really know what to do at this point. I remember the big Gingko tree on the little hill. It was an old tree, shaped like a grandma with her curved back and wrinkly body. I loved how its leaves turned golden yellow during the autumn. I called them, Eun-hang Ip. Whenever the wind blew, it was snowing yellow, and I was covered with them. I would often doze off in that yellow blanket while the sunshine held my feet with her warm hands and the gentle breeze brushed my hair.
