I have always had a passion for writing however, I do struggle with it. My weaknesses and strengths are what make my writing style so unique. I struggle with directly writing down my thoughts and feelings. It takes me awhile to develop a good writing flow. Especially if I am not given specific guidelines for the paper. I also have problems with my word choice. Of course, I want my paper to consist of intelligent vocabulary; but I often use words that just do not make sense in the context. Despite my weaknesses I have very many strengths that somewhat balance out my flaws. I have such a creative mind when it comes to writing because I perceive situations in so many different ways. This opens up my choices of exactly how I want to write my paper.
So far this year, I felt pretty satisfied with my progress this semester. I feel like I am slowly adapting to the new way papers and assignments are handled. All my college work depends solely on me now. No one is going to baby me anymore and whether I succeed or fail depends on how much effort I put into something. For the first time in my life I wrote a paper. Not just a five paragraph essay but actual pages, which is extremely challenging. It’s also been my first time studying for five hours straight so I can pass an actual test. I didn’t know I possessed this level of dedication, it’s probably because it isn’t free.
How does an artist create a painting? He or she cannot simply look at a canvas and a picture appear. The artist must be equipped with proper tools to create a masterpiece: paint and brushes. The same can be said about writers. Writers are not born with the knowledge of writing an attractive paper. They must be given tools of writing and shown how to utilize them. Artists and writers without proper tools will be nothing more than blank canvases and empty pages. I used to be a blank canvas, but a teacher gave me the tools I needed, and now I am a polished portrait.
“Writing is an exploration. You start from nothing and learn as you go” (BrainyQuote). It is shown in this quote that when you begin writing you know nothing, you have to learn and develop a writing style as you write more, it takes time to become a good writer. Throughout my many years of writing, my writing styles have changed greatly. In middle school I had never written an essay based on a book. This year I have gone from being utterly confused on how to write an essay about a book, to having a full understanding of what I’m writing. This year is the year that I have grown more than any other, all because of my teacher, Mrs. Johnson. She has helped me become the best writer I can be this year. In this essay I will reflect on how my writing
Although many will argue that great writing will require time and practice, opponents claim that great writing is like a puzzle which means one can put the pieces together to create an astonishing puzzle. This was the case when I was a 10th grade. As a tyro, I didn’t know much about writing elements and styles. Fortunately, one of my English teachers, Mrs. Roberson, change my outlook on writing. She taught me countless techniques. From that point, I started reading books to increase my knowledge and vocabulary. This was an incredibly wondrous experience for me. I was learning new information while expanding my learning capacity. This was stupendous. It was a life-changing moment for me. Throughout my high school journey,
Throughout the year there have been many ups and downs, mistakes, and accomplishments. Because of these events people can grow as writers and can learn more about the world around them through this media. Over the year I have shown that I have been on both sides of the spectrum of great to unorthodox.
Unfortunately, I wouldn’t say that I am one who enjoys writing as a hobby it definitely doesn’t bore me I just enjoy using my imagination while I read therefore if I am writing it would be on a specific topic or certain subject. I preferred to research my topic in-depth so that I may have a full understanding of what I will be writing about, I will be researching and thinking about both my side and if one exists the opposing sides views or arguments. I will then start to write any and all of my ideas and thoughts down, this is usually just a long free write so I usually use 2-3 sheets of paper during this step writing down anything that I want to say about the topic as well as any reliable sources I can refer to. Once I am completely satisfied with all that I have written down I will transfer it over to my computer where I will continue to add to my writing sample as I go this is where I start to
When it comes to writing I have the hardest time in just getting started. I’m a horrible procrastinator and I overthink about my writing before I have even started a sentence. I worry that I will fail to get my point across or sometimes that I have a point at all. I worry that my writing is just a stream of consciousness on paper and that it will confuse any reader unfortunate enough to stumble across my meandering words.
As I sit here and ponder over the last semester, I smile remembering what my thoughts were before I started. I was excited thinking about joining this semester, noticing that I had English 111 as one of my courses. This will be a breeze I thought. Writing and I go together hand in hand well, and I bet this will be one of my favorite courses that I’ll ace with flying colors. I’ve always enjoyed writing, but I think that was because I didn’t realize what all goes into writing. I have always been homeschooled and never had to write very many essays, although I loved writing. It all changed when I joined this semester and got to write three entirely different essays. I remember almost being in tears, looking at the highlights, when my first essay came back. I smile now, realizing that I never realized all the small little details that are easily overlooked that goes into writing. I don’t think I could have gotten through this semester without “The Little Sea Gull” handbook and the patience and help of Mrs. Wisdom.
When I began middle school I did not enjoy writing. I thought that it was a waste of time, but now I realize that it is a good method of getting my ideas and points across. Now, I enjoy writing and my writing has improved. I think I am good at writing research papers and papers about true stories and events. I could improve on writing fictional stories where I have to come up with my own stories and ideas. Now that my middle school career is coming to a close I look back on my analysis, argument, and narrative essays from the year.
My writing journey actually begins in Spanish, not English. I was born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1994, and Spanish was my mother tongue. I took some English classes when I was four and I had picked up a few words here and there (apple, oddly enough, being the one that stands out the most in my memory) but I did not learn English until I moved to the United States when I was five. Learning English as a second language meant that I struggled to catch up to my peers, but I pulled it off.
I got a C on my first chemistry research paper. ‘It’s awkwardly written,’ my teacher scrawled on the paper in red ink.‘Most of your information is correct but it’s hard to read and harder to understand.’ I was furious. My writing was great as far as I was concerned. I aced all my English essays and she thought she could tell me my writing was awkward? The problem was clearly her. In my anger, I showed the paper to my brother- my brother the math and science whiz- and complained endlessly. “Well,” he said delicately “It is awkward. You’re writing too rigidly. You need to change the way you think. We all know you’re artistically creative. Now it’s time for you to be scientifically creative.”
I believe my way of writing is a mix of free style writing with a slight structured sense while expressing one thought onto paper. I would go about finding a main topic that I would like to write about and then layout the foundation of how I want the writing to form; this helps me envision my writing coming to life. This type of method is something I always do in order ensure I don’t lose my thoughts that I have previously came up with to go along with it. Over time I’ve learned that I wrote in the way I was thought in high school. This was an extremely strict way that doesn’t show the other forms of writing. This led to not me discovering my form of writing for a while. My train form of writing has changed from a strict concrete manner of
I really haven't been writing this years at all but i've been writing on some journal entries that ask me all different questions on different stuff. Only reason why is because i haven't really been there for the writing because i came to the school almost beginning of april and since then we haven't really wrote anything and i just got suspended like 2 weeks ago and so ya i really haven't been there for nothing.
I am not the kind of person who talks or writes much. Putting my thoughts on papers is something I have always struggled with doing. I believe this class will help me improve on transferring my thoughts to paper, in an organized fashion. I look forward to becoming a better writer because of this class.
