In my senior year of high school, I was in the Rancho Verde High School wrestling team. My school wrestling team was the best in the county of Riverside, and one of the best in the state. We were so good that our team made it to the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF). CIF is the governing body for high school sports and only the top level athletes make it there. We made it there because of the great coaches we had coaching the team. Coach Holst and Coach Pena each had a different teaching style; both teaching styles were effective. When it came to coaching, our Assistant Coach, Coach Pena, had a unique style of teaching. To describe Coach Pena, he was a tall, athletic, tan, bald guy who resembled Vin Diesel. He only attended the important …show more content…
I skipped a practice once, and I regret it. After school, I started walking home with my new girlfriend and in the corner of my eye I saw the coach and head coach slowly drive by me. I tried to pretend I did not see them, then they drove off. The next day in practice, the assistant coach made me run twenty-eight laps on the track which is seven miles total. I previously was involved with cross country and track so they knew I was a good runner; they had me run more laps than they would with a regular athlete. Afterwards, he then sent me home and did not let me stay for the rest of the practice. He did not even mention why I was being disciplined. He simply knew that I knew that he knew. I learned my lesson that day. I never missed another practice again. He was always precise, a clear speaker, someone who broke it down, and a good listener. Coach Pena coached more about strength and cardiology. I learned this initially when I met him for the first time. He taught Physical Education and said I was his top student because I had 109% in his class. I always followed instruction, was the fastest at running, and was the first to get stuff done. Other students had trouble in his P.E. class because …show more content…
Coach Holst was a tall, athletic, light-skinned, Caucasian guy who resembled Ron Howard from Happy Days. He went on the bus every time we went on a trip to another school to wrestle; therefore, he attended every match. Because he went to every match, it helped me out greatly and I wish Coach Pena also attended every single event. It was always good when coaches showed appreciation to me when I won because It encouraged me to try harder. When I made mistakes in a match, Coach Holst would go over them with me. This helped me a lot for future matches I competed in because I fixed the mistakes I have made. Whenever I was in a situation where I did not know what to do in the match, the coaches would tell me what to do. He is my favorite coach even if I were to include all the coaches I had in cross country and track. As head coach, Coach Holst play the good cop role. He was nice to the students and was always there for them. He loved the game, was competitive, knew how to coach, was cordial, was a good leader, showed commitment, and showed up to every practice. Coach Holst taught more about form and the correct procedures to perform a wrestling move effectively. Once, I was having problems with performing a move call the fireman's carry. The fireman's carry is a takedown technique allowing one person to be lifted off of the ground, onto another person’s shoulders,
I have always loved sports and the competitiveness that comes along with them. In so doing, I have decided to eventually become either a high school or college coach at some point in my life. Subsequently, I decided to interview the Vilonia High School Cross Country Coach, Coach Sisson. As I walked into her office, I instantly noticed all of the trophies and team photos from all of the past years of coaching. She is also the school nurse so her office has first aid equipment intermingled into the trophies and team pictures. While I set up my notes and questions for the interview on one of the desks in her office, she was finishing up a diagnosis of one of the high school students who felt sick. After her patient left, I quickly started the interview in order to waste no time. She began with how she got involved in coaching. The Vilonia School District expressed their interest to her as being the next cross country coach several years ago. She was widely known for her passion for running and she gratefully accepted the position and has been a coach for numerous years now.
After my first year on the team, the coach warmed up to me. He still however, kept his distance, but I learned to rise above him. I played a total of eleven tournaments and even went to the state championship. Golfing on the team made me so mentally strong. I learned that I could do something if I wanted to, even if there was no support for me doing it. I continued to play for the rest of my high school career, and improved with every shot.
Coaches should have an arrangement of fundamental abilities that they depend on to produce a positive outcome. Definition of a coach from the American Heritage Dictionary, Third Edition (page 167) One who trains or directs an individual or team, to train or instruct teach a team. The goal behind coaching is to exhibit the ability to get the most out of everyone on the team. It should be a goal to bring out the greatest potential from every team member. It’s insane how many players do not even know their true potential. Successful coaches assess these individuals and the team to advance them to the next level of sports. "The Little Book of Coaching, Motivating People to be Winners" by Ken Blanchard and Don Shula (2001) gives a great acronym of the word C-O-A-C-H. The acronym breaks down as follows: Conviction Driven: never compromise your beliefs-Overlearning: practice until it is perfect-Audible-Ready: know when to change-Consistency: respond predictably to performance-Honesty-Based: walk your talk. This acronym should remind you of your job as a coach. A good coach
My coaches pushed me and stressed how important grades was and making plays on the field was. He made sure we were well taken care of, fed and that we were giving back to our community just as much as it was giving to us. The school I went to holds a lot of tradition so the community was a major factor and wearing our school name around was like carrying the torch at the Olympics, you had to be on your best behavior and making sure you were doing something positive. My coaching career will be an image that will live with me forever. I hope to become a
I had little to no motivation for a while and thought that maybe wrestling wasn’t the sport for me. I had shown promise in practice but as soon as I got on the mat for a tournament or duel I just drew a blank. I wasn’t executing any of the techniques I had learned after so many repetitive drills. I wasn’t the only one that had faced such miserable losses but it felt like it. My teammates helped me through my rut by giving me additional advice during practice and being in my corner while I wrestled matches. It was a great feeling knowing that I had people who had my back whenever I needed help. The wrestling team was a close knit group that dealt with all our problems together. We worked hard and played hard together till none of us could go any further. We were each other’s motivation, rivals, and family on and off the mat. If I had any doubts about a match my team thought the exact opposite and made sure that I understood why they believed so. But what made us a strong unit was the fact that we had similar goals and values. None of us wanted to lose and planned to make it past districts. We all wanted to take home hardware not only for our own self recognition but also to bring back a trophy to put on our principal’s desk who just so happened to love the wrestling program about as much as our team. All of us valued the effort that was put into every early morning practice so no one looked down on each other. The connection we had as a team made my experience wrestling all the more worth
Luckily after finishing that terrible season our coach left and went to another school. The next year of wrestling we got a new coach and our middle school team grew tremendously, which now the middle school team is an extremely successful program. Throughout high school we went through a couple different coaches, but junior year finally found one that was going to stick around, Coach East. This was the year that I would make history not just for me, but for Chelsea High school and the wrestling program. All I thought about day in and day out was wrestling and practicing everyday, even after my high school practices going to club
The effectiveness of the coaching method depends completely on the coach, his personality, and the needs of the student-athletes. Each program and institution is unique and has different institutional goals and objectives that attract different student-athletes compared to other colleges or universities (Koivula, Hassmen, Fallby, 2002).
In this paper I will speak of my leadership experiences as well as how my particular leadership style will continue to enhance and shape my role in the culture of the organization which I serve. Over the course of this class we have learned the skillsets (hard vs soft) as well as characteristics traits which make a great leader. Through the assignments, interactions with discussions boards, and group projects I have been able to determine what leadership theory I am best associated with. As discussed in chapter fourteen, the theory which best fits my leadership style is The Path-Goal Leadership Model. According to our textbook Management: A Practical Introduction by Angela Kinicki and Brian Williams, Robert House created and redevised this
All of my life the sports I have played consisted of teams, and those teams had to work together in order to succeed. Team players are people who can cooperate willingly with everyone but it is more than that. A team player improves others performance around him, a team player makes everyone a better individual and exploits their talents, a team player boosts efficiency as far as chemistry.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a successful track coach and coach your protégés to a successful season? Through job shadowing, personal experience, and research, I have found out just how much hard work goes into coaching.
In today’s society being a coach can be extremely complicated especially compared to earlier years. Coaching requires not only many technical and personal skills but also has to include positive psychology that will affect all athletes regardless of gender, age, and race. After reading various articles this leads me to the question, what is a coach? How do coaches differ from one another? In addition are we forgetting the importance of not only coaching but the sports psychology aspect of coaching overall? Regardless of what you may have read or heard I believe not only do all coaches have their own coaching style but every coaching technique and style is different. Coaching styles and positive psychology are two techniques that can provide
The roles and responsibilities of a coach are much more complex than the average person might think. Aside from being a supervisor and teacher, coaches serve as role models, mentors and friends to their athletes. The coach/athlete relationship is unique and multidimensional, with the potential to positively or negatively affect an athletes performance. Interactions of coach/athlete relationships are mainly based on the coach and players performance, age and gender. Throughout every level of athletics in society today, the gender of a head coach plays a significant role in the development and mindset of his or her players and their skills overall.
For the last year, my sports department in my high school decided to make me the Coach of sport’s team. As an athlete’s leader it was a good opportunity for me to show my leadership skills, talent, intelligence, enthusiasm, self-efficacy and conscientiousness. Being a coach of my team, I had recognized my responsibilities to motivate the team members. Give them full support and direction to attain the team’s goal. I also tried to help my team members to energize their capabilities and
A coach is good at gathering information and clarifying it for the person being coached.
