Personal Narrative: My Music Club

Thomas Merton once said “Compassion is the keen awareness of the interdependence of all things.” We are all affected by decisions of others to be selfish or selfless. My music club, in conjunction with my tutoring experiences, displayed me as selfless, enabling me to connect, progress and inspire my own community.
My music club means the world to me. Two years ago my music teacher suggested I perform at my elementary school's last chorus concert. I’ve always been the one in a classroom setting to go out of my way to help others understand material. At first when I was in the sixth grade, I focused on tutoring kids around my neighborhood, not asking for official signing of papers or stipends. I simply requested the kids to come back to me with their next test grade and if it wasn’t an improvement, I’d help them more often. It began in highschool when I started working closely with kids throughout my entire community. I started tutoring at the library through homework help for kids. The smiles received from helping children understand their homework was more than I could ask for. Recently, I’ve overheard Commoncore has made learning material difficult, possibly accounting for the amount of kids at tutoring services like Arista Tutoring at my local middle school. The students frustratingly didn’t understand their learning material but with time I was able to simplify what was taught. Some teachers thought their students would fail their classes but the kids triumphed. The frequent interactions I’ve had with kids has created multiple bonds. In preceding years when first suffering from budget cuts, I constantly exclaimed “Im trying to escape.” but as I've grown older, I noticed the more people leave behind a place to demolish itself, the more we're affecting our later generations. I was one of the kids affected when people didn’t vote or take initiative to change conflicts when they first appeared.
