I was born and raised in Philadelphia. However, when I was quite young, financial hardship made it impossible for my family to remain in the area, and we uprooted to Florida so my parents could provide for us. Life in Florida has not always been sunny. My father, who has a very limited education, has struggled to gain employment and has worked seven days a week as a manual laborer, while my mother works her hardest to supplement his income and take care of us. Watching my parents toil and struggle from a young age made me realize that I needed to do whatever I could to ensure we all could have a better life. The key to that is striving to receive the best education possible and working my hardest to meet my potential. However, I find that

Growing up, the biggest challenge I faced was being a first generation Latina student. My family came from an extremely rural neighborhood in Guanajuato, Mexico called La Sandia. Both my parents achieved up to 5th-grade education in their hometowns. They decided to sacrifice their lives in Mexico to provide a better life for their family and then decided to migrate to the U.S to achieve what many people consider the American dream.
What comes to mind when you hear the word adventure!!? Well there is a place in Florida that is guaranteed to bring out your inner kid every time you visit. This place is known as universal Orlando Florida. This is a place where you can go on vacation and have fun like never before as you did when you were a kid. On my visit to Orlando I stated at a four-star resort located inside the theme park known as Cabana Bay Beach Resort, also went to universal studios and islands of adventure were I felt like I was a kid again.
In understanding how my worldview was subconsciously constructed by my life experiences from the past nineteen years, I had to first think about my roots. I was born in Tampa, Florida to a Puerto Rican mother and white father. They divorced when I was too young to remember, and while I did have a relationship with my dad, I lived with my mother and was raised in a tight-knit Puerto Rican family, often times being cared for by my grandmother. I was an only child for ten years which I’m sure has impacted my personality, and at ten I got a baby sister whom I am very close to. Growing up in Florida was interesting because I was half white and half Hispanic, which mirror the main demographics of Florida well, but I never quite fit in with either group because while I look very white and this is what people perceive me as, I was not raised by the white side of my family but rather the Puerto Rican side. Still, I don’t quite fit into this group either because I don’t speak perfect Spanish at home and most Hispanic people treat me as an “outgroup” and not one of them.
State things that you have achieved even though you grew up where you grew up
The day of my grandparents had told me they have been wanting to go to the Florida Keys and asked if I would like to join. So of course i wanted to go. Oh and when they told me i could bring a friend along i was jumping with happiness inside. They told me we would be going for a couple weeks and they had all expenses covered. So that day I started talking to Jamie and asking her when she would be back, because at that time she was in Florida visiting family. She had told me she would be back . So i asked her is she would like to join me and take a trip to the Keys with me. I could tell she was so excited when i asked her because she texted me back all in caps and said “CALL ME”. So i called her to let her know all of the details. So she ended up getting back .So when she got back from Florida we went to Walmart and bought a lot of
Many folks go their whole lives without having to move. For them it is easy; they know the same people, have loads of friends, and never have to move away from their families. As with me, I was in a different situation. I grew up my entire life, all eighteen years of it, in a small town called Yorktown, Virginia. In my attempt to reach out for a better life style, my girlfriend and I decided we were going to move to Shreveport, Louisiana. Through this course of action, I realized that not two places in this country are exactly alike. I struggled with things at first, but I found some comforts of home here as well.
I spent most of my life surrounded by fragrant pine trees, rocky mountains, and sometimes extremely cold winters. At least one year ago, my family and I moved to a place that is the exact opposite of Colorado which was Phoenix, Arizona. Months before moving, we got rid of all clothing that resembled winter apparel because we all knew it was not going to be needed again. When moving to a new location, it the time to embrace new change, different cultures and certainly different weather climates.
Before I moved to Florida. Basically, I had lived with my family in Thailand. One day my mom found out the way to increase the income. In additional, she was bored with her current job and couldn 't afford to raise me with such a low salary. Therefore, My mom and dad decided to leave their hometown to find a better job with
Growing up in New Jersey is not what it is stereotyped to be. When I tell people I'm from New Jersey, they think of filth and the all-too-famous MTV hit, Jersey Shore. The misconception of atmosphere of where I'm from is absurd. Where I'm from is the heart of New Jersey's beauty, Shamong, New Jersey.
I was in Ohio when I first came to America as an Chinese exchange student, I live in a little town surrounded by endless corn fields, basically in the middle of nowhere. I went to a small public high school, which has only 2 Chinese students, including me. All of a sudden my world is completely changed, nothing from my old days is left, and I’m totally not ready for that. I got so homesick, I began to miss everything about China, people, food, and of course, language. That’s probably the reason why I was so eager to speak Chinese every time I meet the other Chinese girl.
Because of some of the circumstances that make me who I am, it is hard to say I have any one definitive home. Instead, I have had two true homes, ever since I was a young child. What makes this even more of a conundrum is that my homes have always had little in common, even though they are only a few hundred miles apart. Between the big city of Houston, Texas, and the small town of Burns Flat, Oklahoma, I have grown up in two very different towns that relate to one another only in the sense that they have both raised me.
When people hear stories about Louisiana, they automatically think they are taking place in New Orleans. However, my story takes place in northern Louisiana in a small city called Monroe. I was born in Bastrop, a small town right outside of Monroe. Growing up, Monroe was my favorite place. I didn’t think anywhere else would be as cool as this city itself. I made many memories in the small city, some of which I’ll share with you.
Attending Florida Southern College was the best choice i’ve ever made in my life. Hands down. This school has opened doors for me and has granted me opportunities i never thought i’d experience. The past four years I’ve spent my time in New York at community colleges not truly knowing what I wanted to do with my future just trying to find some sense of direction and a field of work where I could flourish. My experiences at those colleges was a joke, not trying to degrade any community college because there are a lot of positive aspects of these schools, but I didn't feel engaged. I felt everyone there went to class and did the work because they felt they had to. Even the teachers seemed like they weren’t enjoying themselves. My biggest fear was having to graduate and go out into a world where I had no experience, with a degree from a college that just thought of me as another number. When I came to FSC that all changed. FSC granted me opportunities that mattered to me. I joined clubs, a fraternity, I started doing community service, became engaged with my major, and started planning ahead and preparing for my
Especially if my parents were to relocate to a low-income neighborhood, I would not have been the same independent, intelligent black young women I am now. I grew up in a middle-income neighborhood in a nice condominium. We had great neighbors that helped one another other out through any situation. According to Vox, they stated "Neighborhood plays a huge role in social mobility, they find — around half the size of the role that parental income itself plays. Moving a child from a neighborhood in the bottom 25 percent of the income distribution to the top 25 percent, they found, yields hundreds of thousands of dollars in lifetime earnings. The statistics rate goes to show that neighborhoods do have an impact on the individual whether you are a child, teenager or adult and it does affect how the individuals will intake in the neighborhood
