H is for Hair H is for hair. Last year my sister and I made a deal. It was her idea, the deal was that we weren't going to cut our hair until she graduated. We made this deal the summer after her junior year. That same summer, she cut four inches off of her hair. I wasn't that mad at her, it's her hair, and her graduation. I decided I would keep growing it out without her. Everybody has always told me how beautiful my hair is, but really, it's just a pain in the butt. In sixth grade I thought it would be a good idea to get bangs. I don't mean the bangs that go to the side like have now, I mean the bangs that go strait across your forehead. I thought this would be a good idea, because when I was little I had bangs and they looked great. I
Why is it that the Black community consider hair that closely resembles that of a white person’s hair or a white person’s hair as good hair and other types bad hair?
8th grade, 8th grade from the opening day to the signing of the yearbooks. This is the year of memories, goodbyes, and regrets. 8th grade and I’m still realizing that there are people in the world that would die to go to a school like this. A school where every body knows everyone’s name, respects everyone, and where violence and fighting are about as common as the Yankees missing the playoffs. When I’m done with my homework and go to bed, as the days of 8th grade wind down, summer will come and go, and I will find myself in one of those giant, scary places called high school.
Nathaniel Hawthorne exploits the life of Puritanism in his guilty pleasure The Scarlet Letter. Hawthorne lends the reader into an insight of life and human nature. The Scarlet Letter reveals the ordeal and evils of Hester Prynne, a woman living in colonial Boston whom was found guilty of adultery. Hester’s punishment was to then wear a visible sign of her sin’ the scarlet letter “A.” As the novel progresses the reader is introduced to Arthur Dimmesdale, the minister Hester had an affair with; and Roger Chillingworth, the estranged husband of Hester whom is out for revenge. The Scarlet Letter examines the relations of the main characters and the consequence of these characters to Hester’s sin. Hester’s sin of adultery interacts with themes of alienation from society, revenge, creativity, and consequences of breaking the moral code. The underlying sin Hawthorn explores throughout The Scarlet Letter is hypocrisy. Hypocrisy is easily defines as a falsehood between one's professed beliefs and feelings and one's actual beliefs and feelings, or an application of a criticism to others that one does not apply to oneself. Hester, Dimmesdale, Chillingworth, and the Puritan society were steep in their sin of hypocrisy. Hawthorne reveals through the pages of The Scarlet Letter that hypocrisy is indeed a sin by punishing the offenders.
Madame C.J. Walker rejected the idea of Black is Beautiful, and in her opinion the pressing comb and chemical relaxers are oppressive since they symbolize the shame associated with black hair in its natural state. Straightening of the hair also became representational of the self-hatred theory in the Black Panther movement, since wearing natural hair was deemed as a decision to challenge mainstream descriptions of beauty.
The second thing that bothers me is Short hair, but only on me, and maybe my sister. Firstly, you can’t do anything with it. You can’t braid it, put it
Often, women walk down the beauty aisle of a grocery store and see all types of merchandise, but not many really know what is right for them. They see products that promise to rejuvenate dry, damaged hair, volumize limp, and flat hair, straighten curly hair, and regenerate thinning hair. With my hair being a kinky curly, when I was younger, I would ask my mother if we could buy relaxers and do them at home. She would give me the same answer every time, “This should only be performed by a professional if you do not want to ruin your hair.”
We all struggle to grow our hair out let’s be honest, we get ambitious and cut it, or you like me, were one of the millions of granny hair women (yeah… you remember that fad) so you bleached your hair the whitest white and BAM it’s never the same again or broke off faster than your last relationship. Or... you're an an amazing mom or grandmother and the candles keep increasing on your birthday cake, but your hair does the opposite and keeps getting thinner and thinner.
I went to bed that night when I woke up I was feeling pain all over my body, I felt really warm but I didn't have any covers on. I looked at my legs,Tini hairs started to pop out of my arms and legs. The hairs were black and yellow they were in a stripe pattern. I felt this really bad pain in my shoulders and went to go look in the mirror and I found wings on my back with lots of colors and different patterns. My head started to hurt really bad and I passed out! When I woke up again I felt something on my head twitching back and forth. I reached up to scratch my head and I felt antennas. They were gray with black stripes. I was so scared. I forgot to tell you I was going to go sit down and try to figure out what was happening as I was going
A) In her magazine article "Black Women's Politically Correct Hair," Regina Jere-Malanda makes the following observation: "Physically, socially, economically and stylistically, black women's hair is indeed, not just hair. It is a big deal which evoked serious debate..." Explain what she means by referring to her article, Chris Rock's Good Hair, and The Tyra Banks Show video clips screened in class.
The history of the significance and culture related to African-Americans’ hair is a very deep and interesting topic. There are many different hairstyles and troubles from having to live with those different sorts of hairstyles, but which hairstyle would someone choose and why? This book shared the experience of African-American men and women in the 1800's to the current era in extensive detail to help answer that question.
A popular discussion amongst the natural hair community is hair typing. Natural hair, in particular, can be extremely complex as one can have multiple hair textures. Subsequently, determining your hair type can benefit you greatly as you embark on this journey. Knowing your hair type can, not only, help you figure out which products work best with your particular grade of hair, but it can also help you determine which hairstyles will work best with your hair. As the natural hair movement has evolved, so have the hair typing systems. Currently there are three main typing systems, Andre Walker, L.O.I.S, and F.I.A. It's important to note that I don't endorse any particular one. I only seek to provide you with information that will help you make better-informed decisions about the care of your
“I Am Not My Hair”, is a beautifully written song from the soulful artist India Aria, and it perfectly captures the whole message of my essay. Braids, weaves, natural, long or short, hair has always been a pivotal point in my self-esteem and how I wanted other people to view me. Over a period of time; however, I wanted to challenge the societal norms of beauty and how that correlates to hair, so on a particular day, I decided to get all my hair chopped off. This moment not only changed my perspective on beauty, but also change the need for me to not get validation from anybody else.
I googled images of short hairstyles until I found the perfect one , it was blonde with spikes and different designs. My heart almost stopped when I saw the hairstyle, but then I couldn't find anyone to style it for me and graduation was only a couple of days away. I found the perfect hairstylist and she worked miracles. My hair was a pretty blonde color with streaks and big curls. I was ready for graduation the next day.
I can't remember the day my hair and I parted ways. We used to get along when we were young! Displayed in the ponytail fountain on top of my head, she was quite cooperative....
Hair is an important part of our body. It can be found anywhere and can be a useful evidence in forensic science. It consists of three layers, namely cuticle, cortex and medulla. Cuticle- is a covering that consists of hard scales made of keratin, which is a protein approaching tip ends of the hair. There are three types of cuticle: coronal, imbricated and spinous types. Cortex consists of stretched out beam shaped cells, buried with pigment granules for hair to cede with color and is the main body of the hair shaft. It may also contain pigment granula, ovoid bodies and cortical fusi (Wright, 2008). Furthermore, medulla can be categorized into continuous, fragmental, absent and interrupted types. If medulla
