If you have ever had the experience of climbing a mountain, you have gotten to experience the ultimate sensation of being on top of the world, literally. For me, I got to experience this for the first time, and I had no idea what to expect. I can recall the first time I climbed to the peak of a mountain. It took place four years ago, during April break, when the weather was as perfect as the view from the top. My uncle and his family recommended the idea to my family to take a day trip to Bear Mountain. Without any thought, I decided to take advantage of the opportunity. I was fairly bored at the time, so I decided that the adventure could be just what I needed. The mountain is not the steepest, although it does make the claim as having the highest peak in Connecticut. Compared to Everest, it looks like a bump in the road. But for my experience with climbing a mountain, the level of difficulty was enough. …show more content…
It was roofed with trees, restricted my ability to see the sky above. The trees basically formed the path, with low hanging branches and roots as thick as the stump providing leverage as steps, making the haul slightly less difficult. Despite being a magnificent day out, the humidity was high, making breathing a process in the heavy air. We encountered a lake about halfway through the hike, and used it as a source to refill our water bottles. For uncleansed water, it passed my taste inspection with ease. The taste was of springtime, and if you were to take a sip, you would know what I
Two well-known footpaths are used during this strenuous hill walk, crossing wild moorland and peat bogs. Exceptional panoramic views and refreshments at the Tan Hill Inn are some of the rewards.
Finally reaching the top was the greatest feat we could have ever accomplished. Being at the top of the mountain was like standing on top of the World. Looking down over the surrounding farmland and towns one could really appreciate the wonder that is Nature. The World below so tiny one could pick it up and make it snow by shaking it, just like one of those snow globes.
Growing up surrounded by mountains has been a great source of growth for me as a person. While both the Rocky Mountains and the White Mountains hold a special place in my heart, the Colorado Rockies and all of their splendor are where I belong. Dwarfing all other mountains in the contiguous US and making all other resorts pale in comparison, the Rockies offer natural splendor that cannot be beaten. The variety of creatures and geographical features you can see when standing on top of the world is much greater than what you can see from the top of the White Mountains. It is for these reasons that I feel my home is in the Rocky Mountains.
It’s not a long drive to reach the hike depending on where you are located. The beginnings of the trails are located on the outskirts of town and with it being so close there were many people out enjoying the hike alongside us. At the beginning and simpler portion of the hike we saw a variety of people including families, college students, some senior citizen couples, and even a small group of fireman hiking to the top for some practice drills they were conducting. As we got higher up to the portions of the hike that were more complicated for children and older people we started seeing less people, and when we did run into others, they were normally around my age or a little older. At that point the people we saw were just as exhausted and out of breath as we were. The new trail that we were hiking did not offer a lot of other opportunities outside of hiking with the intent of reaching the top. There was no management that we ran into or saw during the hike besides the ranger cottage at the very beginning, but there were a variety of signs pointing directions to the different trails and even some caution wildlife
The mountains were tall (11,000 feet +) and covered with bright powdery snow. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. I was eager to set-up camp and prepare for our nine day hunt. But, Dad said that we had to drive around and check out all the good places, just to make sure that we were in the best area. This was partially understandable, but since I am a teenager I'm not supposed to understand anything! So, we spent another several hours driving. We went up and down through the mountains and then we saw it. The spot was beautiful; it was right on the edge of a vertical drop-off, over looking everything. It was like paradise, but colder!
The skies were clear and a very bright blue. We unpacked our gear from the car and started hiking on the trail. Walking on the rocky trail was hard and tiring but the views were great. There were areas that were very grassy and green and others that seemed very dry. Our trail wasn’t on the green side.
A couple of years ago during one of those, on a whim after spending a few days in Arches National Park, my wife and I detoured to the snowy, icy south rim of the Grand Canyon. We journeyed toward it from the east side but got turned back at the National Parks’ gate; the road was snowed under from there on up. After retracing our steps, we traveled down to Flagstaff and spent the night, driving in my four by four truck up to the South Rim the next day. It was an eerie experience to stand on the edge of the South Rim and see only cloud; fog shrouded the canyon’s great gap, leaving us with visual doubts that anything was really there. Defeated, we hit the Visitor’s Center and gathered information so we could go back sometime in the spring or fall with weather more to our liking.
After a great night of sleep we headed out to the world renown mountain of Jackson Hole. It is known for being the steepest mountain on which a ski resort is set up. It is also know for having a great view of Grand Teton, one of the highest peaks in the Rocky Mountains. We could not have asked for a better day of riding. there was a fresh 14” of snow under our boards and after a little bit of exploring we found some great out of bounds and woods riding.
Riding down Pikes Peak was one of the best adventures I have ever had, however, it was horrifying at times. Our whole vacation in Colorado was full of adventure. We rode ATVs, went white water rafting, but the best part was riding a bike down Pikes Peak. This was an exhilarating adventure I will never
All I saw was the mountain about 100 feet down. Once we got to the top of the mountain and parked the car we had to hike up more of the mountain if we wanted to get to the highest point. The rocks we had to climb up were slick because of the snow and ice that was there. Once we were at the highest point of that mountain which is 14,258 feet above sea level it looked amazing. It seemed like we could see for miles of just mountains.
Let us not forget the ocean. There is nothing more spectacular then watching 12 to 20 foot waves crashing against the coral reefs. It is really something. I myself will never forget the first time I went surfing. At first, I got it down pretty well. I had very good balance and excellent control. I began to swim out farther then I should have. I see this wave come in that just blows me away. I try to paddle in to avoid it but it was too late.
Ever since I was a young boy, I have been fascinated with the mountains. I would dream of climbing the highest of peaks with my trusty ice axe or snowboarding down a powdered slope sending a wave of snow with every carve. Spring, summer, fall or winter my fascination did not sway. The beauty of a mountain covered in snow, as if it were covered from top to bottom with a layer of white cotton, is breathtaking. See a backdrop of a sunset on a mountain top and the way the colors will bounce off it is a site you will never see the same way twice.
was warm and steamy. I was tan and happy. My dad, my two sisters and I
The elevation was not friendly to my brother and stole the majority of his oxygen. We hurriedly purchased the overpriced souvenirs and decided to head back down. Exiting the building, we caught a glimpse of the breathless view. My mother noticed that it was in alignment with the Pike’s Peak sign and decided that we should huddle together quickly for a photo. We had a stranger take the picture and we headed down the mountain.
I remember a time in my life not too long ago when my family and I went white water rafting for the first time. We had been spending some of our summer vacation at a cabin in the Smokey Mountains, close to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The next day we would experience feelings of exhilarating excitement, with a sense of suspense and anticipation as we rafted down the Nantahala River.
