I would like to attend the opera because opera is an inspiring art form that provides deep insight into music and also includes certain aspects of storytelling and visual arts. As a musician, I have a passion for both creating and experiencing music. I have always been a fan of film and theater, as it brings together my interests in storytelling and visual arts. I have never seen an opera live before, but based on my various experiences of it on television and on YouTube, the opera seems to bring together my various interests, combining its focus on music with elements of storytelling and visual art. I have played the Bb clarinet since the age of 9, and although at first it was difficult for me to persevere and stay in practice, I have since then developed a much deeper and wider appreciation for music. I am a huge fan of movies with an involved plot and movies with a superb score, such as the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and Jurassic Park. I was also always interested in costumes and settings, especially so with theater productions. I am now enrolled the film class at school and thoroughly enjoying learning about making my own productions. Film and theater are both great mediums for enjoying a well constructed story as well as visual art such as settings, props, and costumes. I think that another art form that combines visuals and drama is opera. In fact, the manner in which opera presents these two genres of art is augmented by the moving and emotional music that ties everything together and highlights all the most important moments. Film, theatre, and opera are also all forms of art that I enjoy talking about. I often come out of a cinema with my friends enthusiastically discussing what we liked or disliked about our shared experience. Ever heard of a story that sings of the “Angel of Music” and the “Phantom of the Opera”? A tale that once you have listened to the sweet melody that you will realized that you've pasted the “Point of No Return”? This love triangle has captivated multitudes ever since the 1910 original Phantom of the Opera was published in France by Monsieur Leroux, although most story lovers recall the musical of the same name by Andrew Lloyd Webber or the motion picture adaption. Although this story has been entertaining people for over a century, in this new era have prerecorded voices and movements begun to overshadow the talented performers of live theater? Although “The lavish screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera (2005) only deepened the damage” of the dislike of musicals made into film “with non-stars in the leads and an unimaginative production,”(Musical),which version, the live performance or the film, makes the story more attractive? To answer these questions, permit this essay to analyze two methods of storytelling: 2011 live performance Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall and the 2005 film, and decide if music and story lovers everywhere have too “turned from true beauty”.
To understand the entirety of a concept one must see it from all angles and visions to learn to appreciate the beauty it portrays. I believe this entirely especially when it comes to arts specifically theater. Not only was theater introduced to me very early on in my younger years I had a burning desire to pursue it and understand its complicities. The Phantom of the Opera both in the Broadway musical of 2011 and the movie filmed in 2004 are in my opinion the most profound performances theater has ever scene. In my first piano recital at the age of eight, I felt overwhelmed by the audience' s applause. Since that first recital, I became very committed to music and attempted to build a music career. At age six, I began playing the piano, and at age fifteen, I began playing the trumpet. Admitted by a professional music high school at age sixteen, I had the opportunity of exploring the broad world of music, and the high quality of instruction greatly enriched my music background. After intensively preparing for my first trumpet competition, I won the championship of trumpet competition for the remaining two years of high school. By attending various kinds of competitions, I further developed my musical interest and abilities.
As a child I always loved to listen to bands being played. Watching all the instruments playing a part was interesting for me. But, the instrument that caught my attention the most was the clarinet. Now as I got older in fifth grade the students and I were sent to try out what instruments would best fit each one in the class. I was lucky enough that the instrument that best fit me was the clarinet. I played the clarinet all through high school and never really knew anything about the instrument, I just knew that I played to make sound out of it. As I found out more information about the clarinet I will explain the history, the parts of the clarinet, tone range and sound, and the types of ensembles a clarinet are in.
For me, cinema is a grand art form that comprises elements from all other arts, including literature, photography, music, theatre and many more. When watching a film you can mute the audio and still view it as an artform. The opposite is also true; the screen can be turned off and the art itself purely listened to but not just the score. The dialogue can be listened to as well, much like an audiobook or an adaptation from a screenplay. Cinema is one of the most internationally mainstream forms of entertainment.
On October 12th, I saw Tosca by Giacomo Puccini held at Atlanta Opera. Tosca is an Italian opera, directed by Tomer Zvulun, accompanied by an orchestra conducted by Arthur Fagen, included a cast of Kara Shay Thomson, Massimiliano Pisapia, and Luis Ledesma (The Atlanta Opera). Opera is an art form in which singers act out drama through a combination of acting and vocal performance. Singers deliver conversation in a musical manner, essentially singing the conversation. Since we recently learned about opera in class, I want to explore the future of opera - where it will go next with the ever advancing modern technology, media and entertainment, and what researches are currently being done at both the industry and academic levels. I will briefly describe what the traditional opera is like using Tosca as an example. Next, I will look at modern opera after the World War II. I will also select one example from the industry and university that are experimenting with opera. At last, I will offer my imagination of what the future of opera may be.
Some people like to stay in control of their life and avoid any amount of extraordinary risk to protect their self-disclosure. Other people don’t shy away from challenges as they are confident that certain obstacles are nothing more than just another thing standing in their way from living life to the fullest extent. Through personal experience, I’ve realized that personal comfort is nothing more than a variety of fears that limit me from challenging myself.
Writing this essay was difficult because I had to remember events that had occurred in the past; one of the challenges, was trying to place everything in order, and be as accurate as possible. It was also difficult for me to write about a life experience that had made a big impact in my life. I felt successful as I reflected on my story and realized I had come a long way. During this process I learned that I have to do multiple organizers to have coherent ideas. I also learned that I have to have at least three or four drafts before I let anyone else edit. I write and then change things and I do this about three or four times before I am convinced with my writing.
I’ve learned to appreciate the beauty of how theater is more than a mere performance, but rather an artform with nuance and depth. My knowledge on theatrical styles has expanded and some of my favorites we have studied in class are Brechtian and Chinese theatre styles. I grew up participating in musical theatre, but never had the opportunity to truly learn the history and details of the craft. After studying RENT, I am inspired by the various possibilities for theater beyond acting, singing, and dancing. Theater can be used for activism or as a form of commemoration. Theater is relevant by communicating issues to the world. Theater is so much more than a dramatic presentation. are heavily influenced by theatre and Broadway therefore, people are more aware of live theatre and often attend plays. Cities such as Modesto, Turlock, Stockton, etc. have little knowledge and are less aware of live theatre. As a result, people in such cities prefer entertainment in movie theatres. The entertainment levels differ between live theatre and movies depending on how that particular entertainment is presented and how the audience recognizes it. The main goal of live theatre is to entertain the audience either through comedy, tragedy, romance, and action through the use of costumes, effects, props, and lighting to achieve the highest possible entertainment level for the people in order for them to come watch more theatre and drama. On the other hand, some people prefer movies to be more entertaining due to enhanced sound and edited picture. Movies are mainly offered everywhere meanwhile, live theatre is harder to find especially local. I would advise people to try out and attend live theatre plays and give it a try. It is a great experience for family and friends. I am glad that I took this course and had the chance to explore theatre and drama. I will definitely attend live theatre plays in the future. It is a different form of entertainment compared to movies. Theatre is composed of many emotions and will leave the audience feeling some type of way. Of all the instruments laid out on display, only one caught my attention. I was thirteen at the time, and naturally, my eye was drawn to the shiniest of the group. I had never heard the sound of a flute before, aside from the cheap imitation of one on my family’s electronic keyboard. Nevertheless, I picked the pretty, gleaming, easy-to-carry flute on that first day of band class. Three years later, I can’t imagine playing anything else. What started off as blind luck and an attraction to shiny objects is now a part of my life. Playing an instrument is always a worthwhile investment; you develop a skill that many people only wish they had, you have opportunities to meet other musicians, and you may even get to travel in a band setting. But in order to reap the benefits, you first have to learn how to play.
An opera is created with a combination of many different art forms, some such as singing, dancing, and acting. It takes in many forms of art and combines it into one, called an opera. Many people have different opinions of things such as an opera, for me I believe that it is a creative way to express feelings in the matter of art, like how a picture is worth a 1000 words. Opera is like an art where the stage is like a canvas, and as the characters take on their every move it is like a stoke on a painting capturing the imagines, like a live canvas. On March 21st we were invited to Elgin theatre to learn a making of an Opera by Opera Atelier, we spent the day learning how an opera is put together and the many steps and art forms used.
Everyone has a preference when entertaining one’s self with a drama. Live theatrical performances, video production, and reading novels or poems are a few examples of how an individual may want to expand the mind. Personally, I feel that reading a drama is the best way to experience a story, depending on the author. The mind can produce extraordinary images that a live performance or video productions are limited to. In this essay, I will be discussing comparisons and contrasts of these examples.
Even though many find opera unintelligible, overwhelming, and boring, opera continues to be a popular form of storytelling. People love the drama and the musical masterpieces written by well-known French, Italian, and German composers. The addition of beautiful costumes and eye-catching scenery make opera an attractive form of entertainment. However, even with all these positive elements, many avoid opera like the plague. The goal of this paper is to help eliminate these negative opinions by educating the opera challenged, to love, or at least tolerate the fine art of opera.
I have played the trumpet since the end of third grade and have become fairly accomplished at it. Music is important to me, and I find the practicing every day to be a satisfying relaxation.
