“As one person I cannot change the world, but I can change the world of one person.” I relate to this quote by Paul Shane Spear because it mirrors how I feel about pursuing a career in nursing. I want to be able to help others as much as I can. Arriving to this career choice was not a simple decision for me. What influenced me most in wanting to be a nurse was helping my grandfather during the past several years, and helping him through different illnesses and surgeries. My grandfather, who I call Papa, lives with me and my immediate family. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to help him because he and I are very close and he is my best friend. Through my involvement in helping him heal from his medical challenges, I was able to come
Selecting to do my service learning at Harvest Hope Food Bank was a very impactful experience. This was so, because of the fact that I have never volunteered at a food bank until now. The organization was able to connect me with the required skills I will practice throughout my career as a professional social worker, therefore better preparing me for assisting clients who may be dependent on my services.
The opportunity for me to fulfill this desire came one day when my friend recruited me to attend a meeting at the Swansboro Parks and Recreation Center, where I was exposed to a recently created community nonprofit organization. Started as an effort to involve teenagers in local government, event planning, and community service, the Swansboro Area Youth Development Foundation planned, attended, and hosted various events. At the end of each the year the association held a meeting where all of the members voted on what to utilize the money raised throughout the year on. Since the organization focused on improving the quality of the area, its profits were used to purchase items for donation to local schools, parks, and animal shelters. After joining SAYDF, I devoted numerous hours to volunteering, in which I discovered personally contributing to the growth and development of my hometown empowered me. By the following year, I secured an officer position, treasurer, allowing me to acquire leadership experience along with further participation. I was engaged in something with meaning greater than a single individual. Although I had previously been reluctant to vocalize my thoughts, feeling my contributions were not important, this organization gave me the strength to share my ideas. As a leader, I was tasked with inspiring a sense of community and highlighting the benefits of assisting others and the town which provided me with tremendous
As an aspiring Social Worker, I have primarily always had the idea that the career mostly entails one who helps those in his/her community. While reading this first chapter, I realized the logistics and history behind the basis of social work, such as how it has significantly developed from colonial America. The early 20th century viewed poverty as a personal decision made by one’s own failure. It was assumed that those who weren’t of the “deserving” poor, were not to be given resources. Therefore, there was a lack of initiative in aspect to social welfare. Over time, the growing concern to help those in need is still not being fully executed as the population increases and resources decrease. Political groups, such as the democratic and republican
A leadership experience that I had, that influenced my goals, was when I was the Senior Patrol leader in my Boy Scout troop. I enjoyed having the leadership title and the opportunity, but I did not enjoy all the time the stress that came with the job title. Things were especially stressful when events tasks didn't go the right way and I had to find a solution to the problem immediately. I know different methods to problem solve now so as to not to allow the stress with an urgent time constraint take my focus, instead of managing the whole task or issue at hand. Methods like the EDGE method (Explain, Demonstrate, Guide, and Enable), EAR ( Express, Address, and Resolve), and SMART goals method (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and
In the past few years I have managed to work in a various governmental and non governmental organizations. During my time at every single company and organization that worked, I met diverse group of people and each one of them had their on story and history.
The most stressful and challenging situation was during my volunteering in the Rehab unit at the hospital. I was assigned to help a student therapist in assisting a patient in walking. The Patient was overweight and it usually takes more than two people when assisting the patient in walking but the therapist and the patient felt confidant enough that she would be able to walk without much help. When the therapist and I began to assist her in standing the patients knees buckled under her and she fell and began screaming in pain. The combined strength of the therapist and I were not enough to help get up and the only thing we were able to do was straighten out her legs and comfort her until more help came. I felt really bad what happen but
I have been working as a vocational representative at RHA, Health Services for almost 3 months and state auditors entered my door to conduct a survey of all financial records, documentation and viewing some of my consumer’s at work this provides objective information to the state of North Carolina about state financial records and the performance of our non-profit vocational center. My first leadership role and I suddenly had employees who needed a leader. And it was me! I provided a framework for our vocational center to serve as a ready reference to state auditors. I did my best to create a positive environment for all vocational workers and communicate a clear vision for our team in assisting individuals with disabilities to accomplish their

The gun goes off. 2 legs whip into motion. The runner pounds furiously down the track. Clearing hurdles, he speeds around the corners. The crowd cheers wildly. The finish line is in sight. 5 hurdles. 4 hurdles. 3 hurdles 2… and the runner’s toe catches the top of the final hurdle. He flies forward and his head hits the ground a fraction of a second before his neck. He will be paralyzed for the rest of his life.
