For two years, now, I have put my personal life on hold to complete my associates in nursing. It wasn’t an easy decision for me, as I had never previously thought of myself as a nurse. A caretaker, maybe, but a nurse-someone who cares for the extremely ill and nurtures them back to health with compassion and love- that was too advanced for me. I decided to become a nurse only a few months before applying to college. I chose this profession because I have a real heart and passion for people. I knew that nursing would be hard and not as glorious and ivory towered as we all imagine (and hope for). However, I never imagined that I would have to change my thought process completely to learn how to care for a patient. Nursing students should have a sound understanding of the logic, rationale and …show more content…
On the other hand, families can be a great resource to the nurse if the patient has had a chronic illness (COPD for example). Families can provide medicine regimes, eating habits, exacerbation episodes, feedback on daily living habits and back story to what preceded the patient ending up the hospital. Also family members can provide something very vital to the patient, comfort. Families are meant to watch out for each other and with that in mind, I will try and remember that the next time I have to work with a family that is not so easy to work with. If it were my own family, perhaps they would act that way too, concerned for the health of the ailing person. Overall I believe in people. I believe in people’s ability to pull through anything, the human body is an amazing piece of finely tuned systems, that are constantly working together for the betterment of the whole body. Also, I believe in holistic care, a care that is rationale, compassionate, empathetic, practical, and honest. I can’t wait to graduate and begin to put what I’ve learned and what I believe in to practice in the
My interest in nursing is fairly new; I had not explored the potential that a nursing career can offer. I became familiar with nursing professionally after becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant. While working with patients, side-by-side with nurses I became enamored with the potential of a nursing career. I now have a rewarding career working as a Medical-Surgical nurse on a Medical University Hospital floor that specializes in Transplant, Nephrology and Urology. Nursing encompasses the ideologies that fuel my passion, upon further research, and conversation with coworkers I realize my career goal of Family Nurse Practitioner; affording me the privilege to care for others by reaching out to various
I wanted to be a Nurse after an incident happen with my son, Jordan. He was nine months old at the time. I went and laid him on the floor in Melisa's, my daughter, room so they could play. Jordan was playing with blocks and Melisa was trying to get him to play with her dolls. The phone rang. It was my nightly call from my husband grandmother, we called her Probe. Probe called to talk about all of her neighbor and family member and what they had been doing that day, hence the name Probe! After about ten minutes on the phone with Probe, Melisa came and said something was wrong with Jordan. So I got off the phone with Probe and went into Melisa's room. Something definitely was wrong with Jordan. He was very flaccid when I picked him up. His lips were turning blue and his eyes were rolling up in his head. I asked my daughter if he had swallowed anything and she said no. Thinking to myself that he could have, I began to swipe the inside of his mouth for anything unusual. Nothing was found, but he began to clinch down on my finger and wouldn’t let go. My first instinct was to call my Mom. Her and my Dad called the ambulance and we were off to the hospital. After the exam and many test, we found out that Jordan had Febrile Seizures related to an ear infection. These chronic ear infections and seizures continued with seizure medication, antibiotics and antihistamines until Jordan was 5 years old.
Including family members in the care of the patient helps them cope better with the patient’s illness and helps them plan ongoing care when the patient goes home. Gaining both the trust of the patient and family can help the health care team get any details that may have been missed on admission, such as medications the patient takes, or special diet, or spiritual needs. Also, the family may provide pertinent information that the patient may not have divulged to the nurse. Encouraging the patient and family to voice their concerns will help implement a safe plan of action.
I am currently planning to attend Richland Community college and graduate as a registered nurse. The reason I chose this career is because helping out others has always driven me forward. I want to study something that I know I will be content doing for the rest of my life and registered nursing is the right choice. Being a nurse has a many perquisites, but my choice has nothing to do with the advantages that it will provide me with. It is more about the fact that I have the chance to make people who are ill feel better and also to hel...
I hope that by sharing my personal statement, I have been able to give you an insight into the person I am and what I hope to achieve. I have included what I have felt to be the most significant influences on my career choice. I expect undergraduate school to continue to be a journey which I embark upon with great
In order to reach one’s goal, the goal should be well defined, firm and the individual must be completely committed to attaining it. Pursuing a career as a Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner has always been my driving goal throughout all my education and training since the age of seventeen. Over the past three years working within a Surgical Inpatient unit as a Registered Nurse, I have become aware of the lack of community resources and access to health care available in rural areas. This has inspired me apply to the University of Western Ontario’s Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner program for the fall of 2014. After completing my Bachelor of Science of Nursing at the University of Western Ontario, I am certain that no other institute can provide the same student experience that I was fortunate enough to obtain. Within this essay, I will first describe my understanding of the role of the Nurse Practitioner in Primary Health Care in Ontario, secondly will describe my motivation for wanting to become a Nurse Practitioner, and thirdly describe professional and personal attributes that I will bring to the Nurse Practitioner role.
“Every man is born as many men, and dies as a single one.” This quote by German philosopher Martin Heidegger fits well with my decision to aspire to become a physician assistant. While I always wanted to help others, especially the disadvantaged of our society, I did not initially realize what outlet this longing would have. Ultimately, however, I found that the PA profession was the best avenue where I could unite this concern for others with my intellectual strengths and abilities.
One of the greatest accomplishments of my life is earning college degree as a first generation graduate. With complex family background, my parents always focused on education that they interpret it as “an infinite opportunity if you work hard with good ethics, do no harm, and stay compassionate towards the dream.” Earning Bachelor of Science in Nursing from University of Connecticut (UConn) and passing NCLEX was the beginning of my proud achievements and a journey of lifelong compassionate care.
I started my Nursing career in India and then I came to the United States and became an RN. I entered Nursing with the thinking that Nursing is a profession that will always allow me to have a job and all my patients will get better. However, from my experiences I understood that Nursing is more than just giving medications, and it requires clinical competence, cultural sensitivity, ethics, caring for others, and life-long learning about others and the evolving field of medicine. Florence Nightingale once said:
All my life I have always wanted to be a nurse. Since I was younger I can recall playing with stethocopes. I have four siblings so my parents paying for my education has never been an option for me. That having said I became a Medical Assistant. Becoming a medical assistant has been a great blessing in my life. I have been able to work with patients, while going to school but I am ready to further my education. I want to be able to provide patients with medications, IV's, and many other skills that will put my full knowledge to use. I think that nursing is a great profession because it is a job that is in demand. Nurses can work anywhere ranging from clinics, hospitals, schools, and even jails. This means a lot because if anything occurs
I believe that Nursing is a profession that is unique to the individual. My reasons for choosing such a profession is due to the fact that I have a desire to help others. Growing up with a very sick parent of whom I traveled back and forth over the years to many physician offices, lead me to develop my career path at an early age which was nursing. I watched the many doctors and nurses providing care to my mom in such a compassionate way, and as a result of the kindness they showed my sibling and me, I was very much aware this was as some may say, “my calling”. I had a conversation with my mom and told her that one day I was going to be a nurse so that I could care for her in the same manner that I saw the nurses and physicians caring for her. I wanted to
I chose nursing as my profession because nursing is my ideal profession. In nursing, I can provide others with the care and the knowledge they need to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I can also give others the love and attention they need to be proud of the life they live. I think that society is very vulnerable and I want to make great contributions to the world of nursing. I don’t just want to be a nurse. I want to be a great nurse who is looked up to because of my experience, knowledge, and competence as a healthcare professional.
Several factors contributed to my pursuit of a career nursing, but the main reason I decided on this profession was my family. The medical field has held my interest since a young age, considering my mom has always worked in healthcare, so I was exposed to the field at a very early age. For many years I juggled with the idea of becoming a doctor or a veterinarian, not quite being able to decide which field in healthcare interested me the most, but in recent years I narrowed the interest I developed at a young age down to a profession in nursing. It was only after a discussion with my great-aunt that I decided to pursue nursing. My great-aunt made nursing her profession many years ago, and at family gatherings, she would often tell me fascinating stories about her time spent working in a hospital.
To me, being a nurse requires a great sense of selflessness and courage to devote your time and being to helping others. Nurses work long hours and experience straining situations for the satisfaction and fulfillment of helping others. More specifically, experiencing life and death, as well as applying your full self--emotions, knowledge, courage, and strength--takes a toil on the mind and body, but the innate satisfaction, human connections, and experiences I would be able to live through prevails over any thought of stress. The quote “A nurse is one who opens the eyes of a newborn and gently closes the eyes of a dying man. It is indeed a high blessing to be the first and last to witness the beginning and end of life” further reflects
My reasons for selecting a career in nursing stem directly from my desire to help our prospering population and community. This career appeals to me because it embodies what I strive to become, a person of influence, a guide, a respected adult, a mentor, and a person that can be trusted and looked up to with great passion. Another reason for selecting a career in nursing has a lot to do with my current job position at Generations Elder Care. Working with the elderly community at this personal care home has enriched my life in many ways, including one for my passion of learning more about the nursing field. As I shadowed the nurses entering the facility I watched them do their assessments on the residents which has peaked my curiosity. I believe being a nurse presents daily challenges which are unique, interesting, and rewarding and that is another reason why I want to become a nurse. Knowing that I have helped someone in some way possible gives me a feeling of fulfillment and enjoyment that I never understood or had before. And this career offers just that, and that is exactly why I...
