Liberty is thought to be the first requirement of society. Even though it may result in greater happiness and increased benefits for others, an institution or law that violates individual liberty has to be rejected as being unjust. Professor Nozick would say that the cooperation comes as a result of exchange of goods and services and agrees that society is an association of individ¬uals, and that cooperation between those individuals is necessary for economic gain. The holdings of each person, in income, wealth, and the other bases of self respect, are derived from other people in exchange for some good or service, or are received from other people in the form of a gift. An existing pattern of holdings may have come about through application of any of the five principles of distribution (to each equally, or to each according to need, effort, contribution, or competence), but those patterns will be changed by transfers, and those transfers, by ex¬change or gift, can be considered to be "just" as long as they are voluntary. As Christine Korsagaard has put it, “physical coercion treats someone’s person as a tool and lying treats someone’s reason as tool” (Christine, 1996). The common phenomenon of information asymmetry in the workplace presents a danger of being abused by deceit. It can be reduced by open book management by giving all the financial information of the company to the employees. With this and proper incentives employees behave responsibly without any supervision. The philosophy of open book management is the Kantian idea of treating employees as responsible autonomous persons and it helps them in making decisions. John Case, an expert on open book management has described this as “empowerment with brains” (John Case, 1995). People are needed to treat positively to further their humanity. For this lack of coercion and deception only is not enough. Some positive action is needed in this regard. While applying Kantian ethics, Norman Bowie has argued that the most obvious way for business managers to fulfill this positive obligation is to provide meaningful work (Bowie, 1999). The third formulation of the categorical imperative, that makes business just, says, “Act as if you were a member of a moral community governed by moral principles of university and respect”.
