The Significance of Personal Legends No one is born without a reason or purpose. While it differs from person to person, there is no greater journey than the quest to fulfill it. From a shepherd searching for the treasure of his dreams, to the son of Indian immigrants who must discover the value in the treasure of accepting in his own identity, following a Personal Legend is a significant part of one’s life. Santiago and Gogol, from the novel The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and the film adaptation The Namesake respectively, encounter obstacles as they embark on the life altering journey to discover and fulfill their destiny. Love in stories is often shown as the path to ultimate happiness, but love causes both protagonists to become distracted from their destiny. After meeting Fatima, a girl he falls in love with, Santiago loses his faith in the significance of his Personal Legend, declaring “I’ve found Fatima, and, as far as I’m concerned, she’s worth more than treasure” (Coelho 123). Santiago nearly decides to stay with Fatima and desist from continuing his quest. However, the alchemist tells him “You must understand that love never keeps a man from pursuing his Personal Legend. If he abandons that pursuit, it's because it wasn't true love…” (Coelho 125). Love is not considered as the most important treasure and Santiago's own destiny has to come first. Fatima also urges Santiago to continue his quest, but Gogol’s girlfriend, Maxine, is less encouraging, even holding him back. Gogol deviates from his path to accepting his identity by dating her. Maxine is a typical white American girl, and their relationship distances Gogol from his culture. After Gogol’s father passes away, Maxine asks that he spend more time with her, but Gogol prefers to complete the rituals and follow Hindu traditions, leading them to break up. By conquering love, Gogol progresses on his path toward accomplishing his Personal Legend. The more selfish outlook on accomplishing one's destiny first before even love is a less common perspective shared by these stories. The knowledge and universal understanding derivative from a journey can leave the traveller positively enlightened. In Coelho’s story, Santiago is faced with recurring dreams which lead him to ‘’traverse the unknown’’ in search of a treasure buried in Egypt, the metaphor for universal connection, and in doing so, comes to the unrelenting realisation of spiritual transcendence. After arriving at the assumed geographical location of the treasure ‘’several figures approached him’’. They demand the boy keep searching for this treasure as they are poor refugees and in need of money, but as Santiago does, he finds nothing. Then, after relentless digging through the night ‘’as the sun rose, the men began to beat the boy’’ , finally relenting with the truth, Santiago reveals his dreams to the travellers. In doing so, Santiago finds out that these men had also been faced with recurring dreams measured around the place where the boy had undergone his own, both relative to hidden treasure. In conclusion, Santiago from The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and James J. “ The Cinderella Man” Braddock from Cinderella Man directed by Ron Howard are two examples of determination and success in their personal legend, their destinies. I truely believe that the choices we make create our future. Our destiny is not set in stone, but it is out choice that make then into monuments.
In The Alchemist Paulo Coelho presents a character, Santiago, torn between following tradition and his Personal Legend. Santiago tries to live true to his Personal Legend, which is a path pursued by those who strive to fulfill their purpose in life. Yet throughout the novel tradition, a motif, presents itself as a roadblock holding Santiago back from reaching his dreams. Coelho juxtaposes tradition against Personal Legend to illustrate its purely individual nature and the necessity of the acceptance of change to reach one’s dreams and goals.

In the midst of my senior year of high school, I was assigned to read “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coehlo. There was a repeated theme within Coehlo’s work in which everyone had their own destiny in life, a “Personal Legend” was what he called it. Of course, Coehlo was a very religious man and it showed in his writing, The method of praying and waiting for a better life instead of actively doing something to achieve your goals was something that I did not agree with. The two books by Markus Zusak and Paulo Coelho tells the stories of two characters, Liesel Meminger and Santiago, each in their own respective stories. In The Alchemist, Santiago’s story is a much lighter tale with an overall optimistic and adventurous air. He journeys from Spain all the way to Egypt and back before his adventure ends. Zusak’s The Book Thief, sharply contrasts Coelho’s story with the much darker and dangerous world of Nazi Germany.

People dream of doing the most impossible things; however, most people never even start to pursue that dream. Practicality wins out and people gradually begin to compromise their dreams until it reaches a point where it is impossible. In the Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho, a young shepherd boy stakes everything he’s worked for on his dream of discovering a great treasure. On the way, the boy learns some universal truths of the world. The Theme of “The Alchemist,” by Paulo Coelho is, always follow your dreams and listen to your heart. At the start of the novel Santiago does not know what he should do when he is confronted by his dream. But by the end of the novel Santiago completely trusts his heart to guide him though life. A personal legend is the idea that our lives are predestined by the gods and we have a legend we all must follow to live a fulfilling life, Except you don’t. The novel The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho uses personal legends as a plot device, the main character’s drive to keep going is that he will reach his personal legend and fulfill his life. The problem is that to fulfill your life you do not need to achieve your personal legend. You do not even need a personal legend. Fulfillment is relative from person to person, but one condition remains, happiness. If you want a fulfilling life you don’t need to follow your dreams, you just need to be happy with your stake in life.
Between Vega’s “The Story of Pedro Serrano” and Saer’s The Witness, each character discovered their own truths and purpose in life. For Serrano, his was the journey to achieve the balance between nature and civilization and twisting it for his own benefit much like he did with the resources on the island. For the nameless narrator, his journey was to gain the identity of what would end up a lost civilization and share their story with the world, ensuring that they would live on and be understood.
