“Growth is painful. Change is painful. But , nothing is as painful as staying stuck where you do not belong.” Narayana Murphy. To grow and find your place in the world you have to go through numerous changes in you life. Uglies is a book by Scott Westerfeild which dealt with personal growth and being confident in yourself. The poem “If” by Rudyard KIpling is a list of rules to help the reader be successful and find your place in the world. “The Third and Final Continent is a passage that described a man’s voyage to find his place in the world whilst living on three different continents. A theme shown throughout the texts is finding your place in the world and growing up, the thesis is developed through symbolism, plot, and conflict. To have personal growth everyone must go through a conflict in their life. If everyone’s life went smoothly, without conflict the only growing up would be done by age. In the book Uglies, Tally has encountered her share of conflicts. “ ‘Until you help us, to the very best of your ability you will never be pretty.’ ” (Westerfeild 106) The quote is introduced the conflict of Tally not being able to have the surgery and become pretty. Without this ultimatum, Tally would have never learned about the dangers of becoming a Pretty and having lesions put in your brain. Furthermore, conflicts often have solutions which can be quite eye opening. The poem “If” is essentially a list of guidelines to be successful this specific verse focuses on conflict. “And lose, and start again at your beginning, and never breathe a word about your loss,” (Kipling 2)This verse discusses how in the game of life you have to be willing to lose it all and start over without complaints. Each text gave examples of growth through... ... middle of paper ... ...mon touch.”(Kipling 4) “Walk with kings” symbolises dealing with wealth or gaining riches. Gaining wealth is a way of finding your place in the world. All three of the texts are saying how finding your place in the world does not require but may involve having a large sum of money or being extremely beautiful. Finding your place does not have to be about material items. In addition, Growth can be shown in numerous ways. A theme shown throughout the texts is finding your place in the world and growing up, this is developed through symbolism, plot, and conflict. People has some sort of personal or physical growth after having a conflict in their life. Symbolism can discreetly show how a character grows over the course of the story. On the other hand, the character grows during the story which is all connected by plot. What does it take for someone to truly grow up?
