Community Assignment
Community involvement provides an environment in which we improve the skills and gain the knowledge that can help us make a difference in our society. It endeavours to provide us opportunities to make decisions and encourages us to satisfy our academic needs sensibly and effectively. My assistance to the community is not huge but I did try to make a difference by helping the ward councillor, Lekan Olawoye, talk to and contributing to community members. Their mission is to provide a fresh start to the community members who are struggling to live in the York South-Weston area. Good jobs are an essential part of a vibrant neighbourhood, and he is committed to give better opportunities for all residents. This includes better transit, reduced poverty, and support for families, healthier communities and safer streets (Olawoye, 2014). Wide ranges of clients are being served with their help, which include; kids, young adults, adults, and the elderly.
During my volunteer, I experienced different cultures and different opinions in the community. I have experienced that everyone cultural groups have different options regarding their struggles. Different age groups struggle to survive due to the low employment rate which causes a lot of deficits. This helped me understand the various problems people face and the how I can help them by giving my assistance. The first step is hearing their problems and the second step is getting someone to represent them can help with a better community development. Engaging myself in this community service, I gained skills like inter-personal, communication, organizational and managerial skills which can help me in my future nursing career.

Being in a school that brought students from various counties and cities with different backgrounds, beliefs, and perspectives, opened my eyes to seeing just how diverse humanity is. In a time when everyone is struggling with personal problems, I know how monumental a simple volunteer act can be. One of my favorite acts of service is tutoring. I tutored an elementary-aged girl for two years in Fort Lee and I will always remember those two years as the most fulfilling. Education is so precious, and children are the most open to it. Not only was I able to teach her math and reading comprehension skills, but how to carry herself as a smart and extraordinarily capable young lady. In return, she taught me patience and how sometimes you just need to approach a problem differently to see the
I chose to volunteer at Rice Care Center and Therapy Suites in Willmar, Minnesota. I chose to volunteer here because, I work in Therapy Suites and primarily interact with short-term patients. Since patients are there for rehabilitation, I do not get a lot of time to build relationship as they are busy with physical and occupational therapy and often have company throughout the day. During my time volunteering, I decided to go to the long-term units, Cushman Cottage and Sophia House, and spend time with the residents there. Another reason I decided to volunteer here is because not every resident gets company or a phone call for days, maybe even weeks at a time. I strongly believe everyone, regardless of age and status, craves interaction with another human being.
As a non-academic pursuit, I have volunteered at a Vera Davis community family source center for nearly four years. Volunteering at this facility has helped me develop critical thinking skills, as well as social and professional skills. Within this center I have the responsibility to provide free resources to people in need. For example, free food giveaway, distribution of bus tokens, computer services, taxes, and tutoring for children K-12. Throughout my experience at Vera Davis I learned uncountable values and boundaries that transforms socialization to a different level. I enjoy being around people because they make me feel alive, but most importantly because I know that by helping them I am improving as a person. Vera Davis evoked a deep
Certainly, volunteering has impacted me tremendously, in which it has made me a better person. Being around the patients and the nurses I have learned
Community service has now grown to be a way of bringing a community together. There is something important about doing good for others. Every community wants the people within it to be disciplined and work for change. Community service becomes easily assessable for it is the one of the best ways to teach a sense concern and sympathy to other individuals. Participating in community service, allows children and adolescents to become aware of good values and morals. Implemented values such as humility, gratitude, trustworthiness, genuineness and respect are some of the most vital virtues that one can obtain from helping the community. The importance of community service ultimately relies on how the provider distinguishes it. The more time individuals give doing community labor, the more
My community service work at County Hospital is to care for the rudimentary needs of each patient. My goals are to provide inspiration during the healing process, teach kindness and compassion, and discover my own abilities for empathy. "Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, "I'll try again to tomorrow (Mary Anne Radmacher)." My hope as a volunteer is to help each patient find that voice, find that courage to go forward.
Previously, I often felt like my experience as a volunteer leader was not really recognized or valuable in my nursing job (Working with Volunteers and Managing Volunteer Programs in Health Care Settings, 2003). However, at the end of this Module One, I have taken steps to influence more confidently as a leader in my nursing job as well as in my role of president of the Staff Committee. For example, when it comes to the Staff Committee’s role, I have asked the Committee members to consider this role as significant
Though many areas of development are integrative, the link between social support and emotional health is greatly acknowledged. The term "social support" often appears in discussions of relationships. Social support means "having friends and other people, including family, to turn to in times of need or crisis to give you a broader focus and positive self-image" (Towey, n.d., Web). Having this social support promotes better emotional health which can help a person face stressful life events.
Volunteering enables a person to develop new skills that he or she would otherwise not have been able to develop. Unlike most other organizations, a charitable organization is happy to give positions to passionate, though inexperienced, individuals who desire to help others and benefit the community. Therefore, an individual with little experience in a field of work can gain meaningful skills that he or she can use in the future. For example, while I volunteered at the hospital this summer, I learned about the daily work lives and professional duties of doctors and nurses. Had I not volunteered, I would not have learned about these things. I was always interested in the medical field, but volunteering at the hospital let me explore my interests and en...
People’s lives are changed every day by their actions and experiences. This past summer, I participated in a community service project, an experience that opened my eyes in many ways. I was a volunteer at the County Memorial Hospital. In my time as a volunteer at the hospital, I was able to meet patients and staff members from all over the world and learn about their life experiences. Listening to all of their stories has made me truly appreciate everything which I have.
A reflection of my volunteering experience can be summarized in two words: Life-changing. It is hard to explain the feelings that occur when you involve yourself in selfless acts for your community, such as volunteering. There is a feeling in your heart that you cannot ignore, maybe it is the happiness you feel or the overflow of emotions in helping others. In other words, it is a feeling in which you want to share with others. Maybe with a friend, maybe a classmate, maybe a family member, or maybe even a stranger. Either way, spreading how life-changing volunteering can be is a great start to making a positive change in your community by simply by involving others.
Nursing is a stepping-stone for me towards achieving my goal, as it will help me gain the ideas and skills to serve the community. In order to learn about the field and start helping people I have volunteered at Children’s Hospital of Oakland for two years. At Children’s hospital, I offered assistance to parents by holding babies and helped the nurses by running errands and comforting babies during their tough times. I have also been volunteering in the emergency department at Doctors Medical Center for more than a year where I have been assisting emergency personnel as well as the patients during their urgent time. I have also volunteered as a student nurse to give vaccinations to low-income population in San Francisco. These experiences have not only helped me understand the complexities of working with a highly diverse and multi-cultural population, but I have also experienced the joy that comes in our lives from offering a helping hand to those in need.
Volunteering benefits a person by building connections with peers, improving family life, expanding career skills, overcoming self doubt, having lasting life impressions, and creating new opportunities. Just a small act can make a huge difference in someone’s life. The future is dependent on the individual person and the people they surround themselves with. Just a few hours will change both the volunteer’s life and the one that is in need.
I volunteered at East Parkside Nursing Home through my church 's mentoring program. At first, I was somewhat uncomfortable volunteering at a nursing home because my great-grandfather, among many others, was mistreated in a nursing home. But, as the day went on and we engaged in activities with the residents, I eventually calmed down and got into the smooth of things. We had one-on-one contact with the seniors, and we learned about their lives and families. One of the seniors was a veteran who fought in the Vietnam War and he told all of the volunteers a few short war stories. For several residents, their families rarely visited them, so they genuinely appreciated the volunteers spending time with them. Later, we made holiday cards and sang Christmas carols for the senior citizens. They seemed so elated and pleased, which made me feel so fulfilled that I could make someone 's day by doing something so
