Supporting Statement - Olivia Shone
Despite being a full time student, I have always found the time to gain invaluable work experience. I will soon be graduating with a degree in Spanish and French literature from one of Canada’s top ranked institutions McGill University in Montreal with a UK equivalent of a 2:1. My past work experience in Entrust (former Staffordshire County Council) and the NHS comprised with my work within a local charity has undoubtedly fired a passion and drive to work in the public sector. Making a difference on a local level can prove extremely rewarding.
My degree and the skills I acquired
My degree in Spanish Literature with French has allowed me to extensively develop not only language skills but learn how to effectively convey arguments and opinions. The composites of the degree were interdisciplinary and covered array of literary themes, genres and theories. The primary focus was on both Iberian and Latin American literature, in which I was encouraged to make connections between challenging themes and motifs. Central has been the ability to lead discussions, engage in academic debate in the target language, giving presentations using PowerPoint and multimedia, as well as analysing and reasoning complex texts in a class composed of mainly native speakers. As one of the top ranked universities in Canada, McGill definitely lives up to its reputation characterised by heavy workloads and tight deadlines, constantly challenging and enhancing my time management and organisational skills.

My future goals
My ultimate goal would be to have a key strategic role in developing public services in order to have to have a positive effect on local communities. To this end, I am looking to develop my work base experience within the public sector and gain additional management experience and qualifications with the goal of obtaining my MA in management in the next few years.
With a dogged belief in excellence for all and aiming to be part of the management of the future, I find the challenge of exploring more effective ways of working and collaborating in order to maintain a high quality of service within a tight financial framework, would provide an exciting and rewarding opportunity at Hertfordshire County Council.
