Values in Action
Over the course of the semester in First Year Experience, we have discussed personal and academic experiences and in these discussions we tied in Saint Leo’s core values. These core values had little meaning to me before I became a Lion and now they guide me through my decisions. These core values include personal development, excellence, community, responsible stewardship, integrity, and respect.
The core value that has been most developed over my first semester is personal development. The core value of community truly helped my transition be as painless as possible. This value is defined by saying the goal of Saint Leo University is to help develop hospitable Christians. They achieve this by helping students feel at home with the spirit of belonging, unity, and interdependence based on mutual trust and respect to create socially responsible environments that challenge all of us to listen, to learn, to change, and to serve. Since Leo feels like home to me, the transition from my actual home to here has been virtually painless. I feel confident and comfortable as if I have a second family.
Responsible stewardship has been another big value that has played a big part in my first semester here. I never really understood how fortunate I was at home. I always had hot water, and any supplies I needed right at my fingertips. While being at school my eyes have been opened to being a responsible steward. I now take quicker showers because I know if I take a long shower the next person who showers will be taking an ice bath and to not print every single thing, but only what is actually needed since I have to buy my own paper for my printer. I feel grateful that I learned to be a responsible steward so
Being in the military I have came across a number of different leadership/management styles and tried to adopt some of those that I thought were effective. The values that we hold in the military are expected to be at a higher standard then our civilian counterpart. This is something that I do not take for granted and try to live by our core values. The core values in the Air Force are what guide our organization and something that I have tried to represent my whole Air Force career. “In May 1995, then-Secretary of the Air Force Sheila Widnall, and then-Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Gen. Ronald Fogleman, established the Air Force Core Values: Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do.” If you as a manager can abide by these values while supervising your people, no matter how many that would be, then morally you can feel like you did your best as a manager.
I had many personal connections to these values. I also had a lot of fun thinking of ways I will incorporate teaching these lessons to my students. One of the main examples that always came to mind was modeling the values with my students. They will be very influential at the ages I will be working with. Many of the students will think anything their teacher does is the coolest thing ever. This is a great way to get the values across to the students. I can model the values and show them how it looks on a daily basis. Just as I will demand respect from my students, I will also treat them with respect. It would be unreasonable to expect things from my students if I am not also willing to act the same
I will be graduating with my Associate Degree in Liberal Arts specializing in Health Science and will be continuing on the with my education in a Nursing program at Harrisburg Area Community College. Many of the morals and ethics that I have towards my field of study and the career path I have chosen correlate well with the College’s Core Values of Mercy. The College’s Core Values of Mercy are Mercy, Service, Hospitality, and Justice. In the healthcare field all these core values are at the fore front of our careers and are used every day with every patient and their families. Social value of college comes from every interaction a college student has with other student and the faculty of the college, and how they deal with the everyday stress of college. In my experience, there is a great social and cultural value of college and everyone should at least try to experience just a little of these values for themselves.
Leaders do not just appear out of thin air and automatically start making great things happen in the world. A leader must learn from prior leaders or role models that they are surrounded by that they look up to. Not everyone can be a leader, only some people have the correct characteristics it takes to lead others in the right direction. Those who do great things, for example volunteering at a homeless shelter, are not leaders. Many people mistake a “great person” as being a leader, which is completely incorrect (Kouzes and Posner, p. 3). While playing an active role in your community is a positive thing it does not make someone a leader of that community. All leaders have a group of people they have inspiration too and that is a good way of determining who your personal leaders are. My mother, brother, and grandfather are my leaders because I have always looked up to them and tried to mimic some of the great things that I have seen them do. My mother has always been an independent women with goals and an action plan to accomplish those set goals. Stephen, my elder brother, is outgoing and tends to have a leveled head when it comes to evaluating stressful situations. My grandfather is the most caring person I know and he is amazing at keeping situations under control in order to please everyone. These are all the qualities I want to combine into my own leadership style. I know I am not a efficient leader of these actions yet, but I plan on growing into this as I more on into my career, fulfill my set goals, and adjust to the curve-balls that life throws at me.
Community. This was the overwhelming impression I received while walking down McAlister Place on the Tulane University campus. It was palpable. Somehow, in the middle of the vibrant city of New Orleans, Tulane managed to create a tight-knit student body that resembled a family. Coming from a high school that encourages team work, whether in sports, class projects, or school clubs, I learned the importance of being a part of a community. After visiting Tulane, I realized how much I would benefit from being a part of this particular “family.” not to mention how inspiring and fun it would be!

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader,” (Adams). A leader is a person with the ability to comfort somebody through any task. He or she can make a person trust them whole heartedly. They make people believe in their cause. There are only a few exceptional people that can affect the world on such a massive level that it leaves you in awe, and Nelson Mandela is one of those few exceptional people. He is one of those people that you know in your heart that he is something special. Mandela is a man of unwavering determination, exuding confidence, with the ability to inspire a nation; making him the pinnacle of leadership.

My core values will outline all of the decisions that I will come across in my personal life, as well in my career. Being true to my core vales will bring out my true character and keep me motivated. Understanding and living my core values will open the door to more inspiration in my life. Finally living up to my core values allows me, to get more of the right things done and enjoy the journey more.
My core educational values define what I believe is necessary tools students need to be successful. Such values are provided by the community of people (educators, parents, business partners) who touch the students’ lives. I value knowledge because without awareness of specific content, students are not able to truly feel a part of society. I value development of skills in order for students to apply their knowledge. When skills are applied, students demonstrate their knowledge and ability to function in our current world. I value critical thinking in our students so they can extend their knowledge and skills to solve complex problems benefitting our present and future. I value citizenship and feel that education has a responsibility to model and nurture character qualities in our students. Educating students is raising them equipped with tools that will enable them to function as contributing participants in a productive society. Knowledge, skills, critical thinking, and citizenship are educational values at the core of developing a student ready for the world’s challenges.
There are so many things that are important to me, but only a few that could greatly affect my life if I didn’t have or accomplish them. The biggest things to me are success, family, and freedom. These are all things that are essential to my life in so many different aspects.
Understanding who we are as individuals can be a struggle for people throughout life. It can be difficult to comprehend who we are and why we exist. There are daily outside influences that help create who we are and what our values are. Values play a significant role in our lives. They shape the choices we make and reveal a big part of our identity to the world. Some values may be more important than others, but they still manage to influence our lives in one way or another, whether we know it or not. Values can range from a tangible item to an idea that has influenced us to stand by and remember those values. The values we hold with the highest importance act as a guide and help us prioritize our purpose and goals in our daily life. My family has taught me a list of values and traits that have helped me become a well-rounded individual. I value my family more than anything because most of my core inner values have started from their teachings at one point or another. My top values that I have developed from my family are dedication, honesty, and wisdom. I will discuss who I am in terms of the important values that shape my personal belief system and decision making framework that, in essence, describes the direction of my life.
My core values have changed over the years and have turned from negative core values into positive ones. Before starting a family, my core values were anger, hopeless, and pain (book 266-267). I felt broken, and my trust in people had diminished. It seemed like a never ending cycle of meeting untrustworthy people who lived to tell lies for their own benefit.
