Perseverance in Robert Frost's Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
Epictetus once wrote, "First say what you would be; and then do what you have to do." This aphorism of self-discovery and obligation clearly describes Robert Frost's poem, "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening." In the course of the poem, Frost's speaker is confronted with two choices: he can either forget his problems or he can follow through with his responsibilities and make the most of life. It is through Frost's remarkable presentation of the speaker's thoughts that the reader may see how difficult this decision can be. Through powerful elements, such as alliteration, rhythm, and imagery, Frost stresses the importance of perseverence and facing one's fears and obligations.
To accentuate the importance of perseverance as opposed to giving up, Frost uses clear alliteration in the speaker's thoughts. In the beginning, the speaker's flowing words accent his state of near acquiescence with his dream world. But soon, reality reminds him of his responsibilities when the speaker's horse "gives his harness bells a shake / To ask if there is some mistake" (Frost 9-10). Frost ingeniously employs the sudden, harsh k alliteration to emphasize the demands of the real world upon the speaker. However, Frost reveals the speaker's confusion over what path to choose when he realizes "The only other sound's the sweep / Of easy wind and downy flake" (Frost 11-12). Frost's usage of the soft s and w sounds of the peaceful snow contrasts with the harshness of the real world and persuades the speaker that much more to forget his obligations. It seems like he spent much of his life thinking about the little things. He often pondered the meaning and symbolism of things he found in nature. Many readers find Robert Frost’s poems to be straightforward, yet his work contains deeper layers of complexity beneath the surface. His poems are not what they seem to be at first glance. The Church was struggling with internal conflicts, rebellions, social changes as a result of the breakdown of the feudal system and they were reflected in terms of religious dissatisfaction that demanded religious reform. These threats were treated as heresy rather than political dissent and its response was to frame the motives and practices of heretics in terms of satanism. Witchcraft threatened Christianity because it provided an alternative values system compared to the established patriarchal institutions and questioned male power. Robert Frost was a master of poetry he used figurative language to guide the reader on a journey through imagery. One of the most misunderstood poems by Frost is The Road Not Taken, Frost uses an introspection on life choices and not regretting taking the road less traveled.
"It [the poem] finds its own name as it goes and discovers the best waiting for it in some final phrase at once wise and sad." (Frost 985). The title, "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening", identifies the general image the reader would envision while reading the poem. It clearly depicts the general perception of the character. It takes on that the story line of the poem is the character standing in the woods on a snowy night reflecting on life and his surroundings. As the poem comes to an end with: "And miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep."(l. 15-16) it takes on the feeling of a wise choice with the right intentions in mind. At the same time, it gives the gloomy feeling of a tired person who must go on through the dark woods alone with his horse at night, who must carry on no matter what. Frost describes this by explaining ."..the happy-sad blend of the drinking song." (Frost 985). It can be viewed that even though the character is alone and glum now, that there may be some form of salvation awaiting him.
Some people go through their lives without reflecting about how their decisions have shaped them as a person. The poems “Fire and Ice” and “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost both use the importance of decision making and its effects on the way we live to highlight how our path through life is defined by our choices. At the same time, Frost uses the extreme opposites in “Fire and Ice” and the similarities of the choices in “The Road Not Taken” to explore human nature and permanence of decisions.

Frost’s poem explores the different paths and choices individuals are presented with throughout their life, which can later influence their lives significantly more than originally anticipated. Leadership has been defined in many different ways with many different functions. I define it as a person or organization guiding or directing a group towards a common goal or idea. This may sound simple, but I believe it can be difficult with the fact paced and competitive modern times of today. Leadership can be broken down into traits and principles that not only define a person, business, place, but even an organization. These traits consist of self-confidence, ambition, determination, and adaptation to change. I’ve chosen these traits because I believe these traits help in not only defining a leader they give support in building a strong vision. Building that strong vision is one of the many ways on how to become a great leader as a manager in Corporate America today.
The speaker in Robert Frost's 'The Road Not Taken' gives the reader insight into human nature with each line of poetry. While, Frost had not originally intended for this to be an inspirational poem, line by line, the speaker is encouraging each reader to seek out his or her own personal path in the journey of life. Romanticizing the rural woods of New England creates the perfect setting for the theme of self-discovery laid out and described by the speaker.
