To come of age means to alter one’s perspective from a naive view to a practical and independent outlook on life. Before one comes of age, they are often naive due to lack of knowledge and experiences, which is exactly what happens throughout the novel Perks of being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, and in the poem “Taught me Purple,” by Evelyn Hunt. Having been quiet and lacking many friends, Charlie, because he has so far not come of age, has yet to perfect the skill of standing up for oneself before the start of his first year of high school. Stating self evident truths on the independency an adult must have, Lythcott-Haims focuses on different skills 18 year olds will need to sustain themselves and methods parents can use to help ensure their child's success in the future. “An 18-year-old must be able to earn and manage money,” (Lythcott-Haims, 7) which is impossible if one is not given the opportunity and responsibility to make his/her own mistakes, allowing him/her to learn and grow, mentally, physically, and financially. Equivalently, in the novel “Perks of being a Wallflower” main character, Charlie, presents independence when he takes hold of his life and makes his own decisions. “Regardless, I decided never to take LSD again.” (Chbosky, 100) A big part of growing up is not only realising that actions have consequences but realising what the potential consequences could be, and how they may affect your future life.
