Over the next six years Smith’s age slowly caught up to him as he ranged from 1021 to 1397 yards. Finally, after his thirteenth year as a Dallas Cowboy, Smith was traded to the Arizona Cardinals. In his first year with the Arizona Cardinals (2003), Smith was injured and played as a backup for the majority of the year. This is illustrated through his career low 256 rushing yards. However, in Smith’s final year in the NFL, he rushed for 937 rushing yards, bouncing back from a disappointing year.
These great moments add to the tradition of Penn State football history, but that’s exactly the point, Paterno’s triumphs are history. The past four seasons, including the 2003 season, have consisted of more losses than wins. Recent trends in college football usually point the blame of a losing football team in the direction of the head coach. For Penn State and Joe Paterno this situation should be no different. The dilemma is in the hands of the school’s Director of Athletics, Timothy M. Curley, who has to convince one of the greatest football coaches to step away from the game he has been devoted to for over 50 years.
But make no mistake, with eight Pro Bowl selections as a cornerback, defense is where Sanders earns his big bucks. After intercepting 30 passes in his first six seasons, quarterbacks stopped throwing his way. Sanders, who earned back-to-back Super Bowl rings with the San Francisco 49ers and Cowboys, is a big-play guy. He holds the NFL record for career returns for touchdowns with 19 (nine on interceptions, six on punts, three on kickoffs and one on a fumble). He also has three touchdown receptions.
A coach must maintain a pristine level of emotion and discipline so that he is respected by everyone. OVER THE YEARS, FOOTBALL HAS GONE THROUGH DRAMATIC CHANGES. Played back on November 6, 1869, the first American Football game did not show the characteristics that it does today; the game resembled rugby more than it did football. Yet, over the years football has been molded into the way people see it now. During the early years of football, many players were injured due to the violence in the game, and as a result of this, many people wanted to change the way the game was played.
He developed into a Pro Bowl alternate. Chicago liked him so well it kept him out of free agency in 2002 by giving him a $4.5 million signing bonus. Since then, he has been plagued by injuries, prompting the Bears to re-think where he fit under the salary cap. Although Rex Tucker has played in just 11 games during the last three seasons, Coletta said he is healthy and eager to play in 2005. He missed time in 2004 with a dislocated elbow and a hamstring injury.
This year out of all of the members that were voted on, the most surprising vote was Ray Guy, Punter for the Raiders from 1973 to 1986. This was the first year that a Punter had ever made it into the Hall of Fame. He punted the ball 1049 times for 44,493 yards, leading the NFL in multiple records. The NFL is filled with young talent, brilliant veterans, and recognized franchises, and I’ve told about the privileges of making it to the Pro Bowl, the excellence of making it to the Super Bowl, and the honors of making it into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The NFL is one of the most recognized sports in America, and its popularity never seems to disappear.
At New Orleans Walter ripped off perhaps the best touchdown run of career, finishing with 134 yards on 20 carries. Walter finished the rookie season with 679 yards and seven touchdowns, the lowest total of his football career. Also, the biggest letdown of his career occurred that season, as Payton was he...
Colorado embraced this team and nicknamed them the “Orange Crush” named after their perilous defense. Led by head coach Red Miller and quarterback Craig Morton, unfortunately they lost to the Dallas Cowboys in a 27 to 10 game. The Denver Broncos fans had to wait another 9 years for the next three Super Bowls under the direction of Head Coach Dan Reeves and with Colorado’s most iconic quarterback, John Elway in 1986, 87, and 89. Quite surprisingly, the Broncos lost all three Super Bowls (XXI, XXII, and XXIV) in the 80’s. Finally in the late 90’s John Elway near retirement led the 1997 and 1998 Broncos to their first two consecutive Super Bowl wins (XXXII and XXXIII) under Head Coach Mike Shanahan.
I know what your thinking, they've always stunk, but that's not true. In the Rams 67 year history they have won 3 NFL championships. They have won 11 division championships along with numerous wild card berths. The Rams have played in the NFL for 67 years like I said before. They played every year except in 1943 when a shortage of players, caused by WW2, left them with no team.
Franco Harris made the “Immaculate Reception” which lead to the first Pittsburgh Steelers victory for them (Brooks and King). In the 1970’s the Pittsburgh Steelers won four Super Bowls (Brooks and King). In 1978 the National Football League moved from 14 games a season to 16 games (Brooks and King). O.J. Simpson is the first player to rush over 2,000 yards (Brooks and King).
