Performance Appraisal

Performance Appraisal The three pieces I studied were all performed by female 'rhythm and blues' artists. The pieces were: Pink - Like A Pill, Brandy - What About Us, and Janet Jackson - All For You. They all had various kinds of backing tracks with their vocals recorded on top. I wanted to achieve roughly the same kind of thing, so I used a backing track and sung on top. Most backing tracks that I use are either from a CD, downloaded off the internet or I create them myself. However, this time I could not find a suitable backing track for any of these songs. The song that I wanted to perform was Pink - Like A Pill, so I choose the closest song to it, Don't Let Me Get Me. This is also sung by Pink, it's from the same album, and its got the same structure and feel to it. I found a suitable backing track for that song on a karaoke CD. I wanted to make my performance sound upbeat, but also reflect the meaning of the song. Alicia (Pink) put meaning into the song by using dynamics and harmony backing vocals. I will try to do the same, but I wont have the backing vocals. Compared to my other two songs (Brandy - What About Us, and Janet Jackson - All For You), my chosen song isn't much different. All three artists have really powerful voices and can express themselves really well. Brandy's song has a slightly more of a dance feel to it than a lot of other r'n'b songs. Her backing track has lots of sound effects and the main feel of it is almost futuristic. This goes well with her video (on CD included in coursework) as a lot of it is computer generated graphics and solo dance routines. The meaning to this song is quite a mixture. Her boyfriend or lover is messing around in the relationship, but Brandy provides a 'girl power' view by saying she doesn't need him anymore and that she can do better.
