Michael Berna Ava Hardiek English 101 2/6/2015 Are People Overly Dependent On Computers? In our current society, people have become increasingly dependent on technology and computers to perform daily activities. Presently, every aspect of life is influenced by the emergence of computers and technology. Computers nowadays are used in mobile business operations, socialization, advertising, gaming, and many other tasks. Many people depend on computers and technology to succeed in life. Due to the extensive use of computers, a question is posed, are people in the modern society, becoming overly reliant on computers? In today’s world, children are beginning to learn how to use computers and technology at a very young age. They are shaped through …show more content…
Computers usually ease our lives by giving us easier alternatives to solve problems. In addition, they make many things possible to us for our own comfort. It is possible to get affordable cost goods through the Internet thus increasing convenience. However, these comforts sometimes turn out to be the starting point of our problems. For example, there’s a case of a person conned three billion dollars via the internet as he tried to purchase a car from Japan using the Internet (Gerdtman, 121, 2012). Again, this shows how many people are overly dependent on computers. Engaging in such a transaction of shows how some display overconfidence and over-dependence in computer use. Nevertheless, it is significant to maintain life outside the computer world; the life that is always spent attached to a computer screen is not much of a real life. When the computer becomes the core point of an individual’s life, they usually undergo a transformation in behavior. They generally become very lazy, develop anti-social tendencies, and in extreme cases, some people lose the ability to operate without their …show more content…

Technology has become something that most people now cannot live without, and are addicted to it. When we talk about the impact of technology on society, we always talk about the positive effects that it has and about how technology has made life easy on us. We talk about the internet as a source of information and communication, and basically forget the fact that excessive exposure to it leads to internet addiction in the end. We often discuss the fact that technology has made life easy, but it is also easy to forget that it has made us largely dependent on it. The article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” by Nicholas Carr, and the article “Better than Human: Why Robots Will—and Must—Take Our Jobs” by Kevin Kelly focus on technology. Kevin Kelly focuses on the future, and Nicholas Carr focuses on the effects that technology has on humans.
Our knowledge and use of technology is expanding larger and larger each day and we are learning how to fit large computing capabilities in smaller and smaller devices. Hinman notices this boom in technology and knows that its power is great, and many of us don’t know how it has impacted our lives in such a great amount (Hinman 466). In our everyday lives we have relationship with computers all over and it seems impossible to not use computing devices in our everyday lives. Hinman believes that the computer world has great benefits to make our lives easier, such as easy online shopping, and the possibility of computer guided driving. He even realized their impacts on relationships are becoming digitalized and we are creating completely computer based relationships (Hinman 467-469). Although with all the good, there are concerns with...
In today’s society, we are overwhelmed with technology. Technology is changing everyday, and will forever be a staple in our lives. The effect that technology has on our children has brought some concerns and some praise. Children these days have no choice but to somehow be influenced by the ever growing technology in our society. Our common concern has been that although digital technology has boosted children’s ability to multitask, their ability to process information deeply may be deteriorating (Carpenter, 2010).
In 2010, 28% of citizens in the United States stated they wouldn’t be able to live without high-speed internet. Technology in today’s time period has begun and already has taken over the lives of individuals. In addition, there are about two billion TV sets and one billion computers in use. Thus, the average American household uses 10.6 mega watt-hours electricity per year. Also, there are 160 billion emails that are sent daily even though 97% of which are only spam messages. As a result, nine out of 1,000 computers have been infected with spam. Technology is taking over any object and every person. Skills that every human being needs is being destroyed or replaced. For example, Amazon.com is now selling more “e-books” than printed books. Therefore, our society is going downhill with new advancements.
In a modern world driven solely by technology, it appears that almost every aspect of our daily lives now relies on some form of technological means. While reading the article “Is Google Making us stupid?” written by Nicholas Carr on the Atlantic. Made me realize how dependent we are to technology and its commodities. It is a great example of what is going on with todays society and the attachments to technology, How it's almost impossible to complete certain task without the help of our handy technological tools. But it’s what it does to us without intention that may be a cause for concern. For one, we now live in total dependency of technology, from cars, to smart phones, home computers, or even our TV’s. Today,
“Technology has provided the opportunity to create an entirely new learning environment; it has significantly increased the range and sophistication of possible classroom activities” (Hawkins 1997). The vast majority of youths today, grow up with computers and encounter some form of digital learning (Kolikant, 2009). The idea that has had the most impact is that the technology today will be outpaced by the next generation. Most of the technology seen today will never be used by an infant when he reaches school age.

“The society in which we live in has been so profoundly affected by computers that historians refer to the present time as the information age.” (Presley, 16) Comments like this show how computers have changed how we live, work, and play. For example, combined with the Internet, computers have incorporated many forms of communications into a universal one. The computer’s role in the world continues to grow in importance even as we sometimes take it for granted. We must realize how greatly computers have affected our lives. Computers have become such an integral part of our lives because we rely on them for numerical calculations, storage of data, communication, and technological processes.

Today we live in a world where everything is practically automatic. We can refer to today’s society as the “technologically civilized” society. There’s been a drastic change from the older days till now. As an example, in the past people had to wash and dry dirty dishes by hand, or write a letter to get in contact with someone. Nowadays, we can push a simple button to start the dishwasher, or give that certain someone a phone call or send an email. Technology can provide the benefit of giving us a simpler, stress-free life or it can become a misfortune we face everyday. Unfortunately, today technology has overcome our lives and we have become too dependent on it.
Nowadays people use technology from everything from business to education to entertainment and much more. Almost everything we do and every aspect of our lives is affected by modern technology. With all the advantages of technology it is not surprising that we rely on it for almost everything in our daily lives, but how much is too much? People’s over-use computers and other modern technology is causing vital skills to be lost as technology replaces traditional ways of doing things. We are losing communication skills, memorization skills, and ……..?????????. And with the loss of these skills, what happens when technology fails?
From the development of technology, people have become more and more overly dependent on technology in order to make their lives easier to handle, and technology has become something to have power over human behavior. Spreading out these advance technologies and having control over people’s behavior is peculiar. Moreover, most of the children nowadays use many different kinds of technology without their parents think if they are using it right or not . The technology eventually reaches the point that it may upgrade our present and future life. Everyone of us has one kind of technology in our homes and even the place of our works, but the computer technologies have more effects on people.
Another point to be made, is that these children have picked up on using computers remarkably fast. In as little as two months, these children had already figured out how to download games from Disney.com. In another ex...
Today is an era of information explosion. In the past few years, many newly invented technological devices and software are now tightly integrated with our everyday lives. Today, people can look up almost any kind of information, make friends, communicate with others, and express ourselves with the simple touch of a button on a device we usually keep within arm’s reach. “Widespread use of technology is changing the way we work, learn, and communicate – even the way we carry out our regular, daily activities.”(Seifer and Mihalynuk) These devices not only benefit our livelihoods and increase our happiness, but they are also integral in advancing education, technology, development, and, in general, human evolution. The children of today, who have been raised in this era of information explosion, will undoubtedly reap such benefits and, in turn, advance society towards a better generation.
Computers have always been useful, but not until recently have computers become useful for children who are twelve and under. Of course these children enjoy playing games and talking to there friends on the computer but due to new innovations coming out everyday children can now do a lot more then just play and socialize. Computers have brought school to the home. When children come home from school it used to mean school was over but today if you have access to the internet school is know longer over but just beginning on the internet. The internet has special educational sites that children can visit and learn from. Besides that children actually can have contact with there personal teacher from school. A new invention called the “Mobile Author can be used by human instructors either from a computer or a mobile phone to create their own Intelligent Tutoring Systems and to distribute them to their students. Students can also use any computer or mobile phone to have access to theory and tests.” (Source 2, Journal) Homework, notes, review assignments can now be given over the internet by the child’s teacher from there school. “Instructors can monitor their students; progress and communicate with their students during the course.” (Source 2, Journal) Children can learn new information on the internet and they are able to review and get extra help on things they don’t understand. If a child realizes that they do not understand something when they get home, they know longer have to wait to go in to school for extra help, but they now can communicate with there teacher online or they can go to an internet tutoring system which will give them just as much help as being in a regular classroom.
