The pen is mightier than the sword
The pen influences your mind peacefully. Weapons do not. They tend to violate every path of human kind. The pen influences more people than the sword and has more impact on their lives. The power of the sword is negative destruction of life, and the sword has only caused problems during its reign of power.
Early man relied on their muscle power. In fight the for existence, it was survival of the fittest. Gradually man became civilized and progressed in society. The fate of nations was shaped by wars and gradually man realized that weapons cannot solve problems. “Weapons could kill a man but cannot bring change to his mind” (Goldsmith, 46). The French citizens made a big mistake by making Napoleon their emperor, he failed to conquer Europe and he brought nothing but destruction to France. He violated the path of human race.
Ideas have a much larger impact than violence. Forcing or threatening has never worked. It is incapable of changing the ideas and beliefs of a person, a sword can make someone act in the way it ones but it cannot change the person’s thoughts. When people are influenced by new ideas, changes occur in the society the thinkers are called philosopher they have shaped the society that we live in today. The sword is the meaning of destruction, evil, lies, impurity, wickedness. So the pen will always over succeed the sword. A pen can change a person. It can influence a person. It is the power of the pen that shaped the world. It is flow of energy. It is the truth of humanity. Truly the pen is mightier than the sword.
Voltaire uses satire in order to attempt to bring about change by mocking the thinking of many Enlightenment philosophers of his time. Voltaire also utilizes other literary devices such as irony and sarcasm to make his satire more effective. One example of Voltaire’s use of satire is evidently clear in the way he talks about the belief of Candide and Pangloss as their world being “the best of all possible worlds”. Voltaire depicts both Candide and Pangloss suffering immense and repeated tragedies yet still believing that their world is “the best of all possible worlds”. Another clear example of satirical irony comes in Candide’s encounter with Eldorado. Candide and his “valet” Cacambo come accross Eldorado which is a seemingly perfect world that is
Satire refers to the practice of making fun of human weaknesses or character flaws. Even though satire is making fun of someone or something, its purpose is to actually derive a reaction or disapproval from the person who reads it. For example, Candide was consequently banned from the baron’s castle, “the best of all possible worlds”. Voltaire used satire in this quote to demolish the concept of optimism. He was trying to convey that the world was not the best of all possible worlds. For this reason, Voltaire included El Dorado, which he thought was the best of all possible worlds. The problem of evil ties into this quote also. Voltaire mocked god by basically saying, if god is all powerful, then why is the world that we live in full of tragedies and disasters? There was a great amount of events that occurred to prove there was evil. The Bulgar-Abar conflict, the severe thunderstorm, the seeming death of Cunégonde and the legit death of her parents, and the experiences during the investigation are instances of evil in Candide. Another example of satire in Candide is the optimism of Candide and Pangloss. Even after the earthquake, rapes, disease, and execution, Candide and Pangloss kept ahold of their Optimism. Voltaire decided to use satire on the subject of optimism to show that the world is not a fairytale; there is evil whether it’s natural or committed by people. Romantic love is also an idea Voltaire chose to Satirize. As you know, Candide goes through hell and back to receive the love of Cunégonde. Soon Candide’s hopes are shattered and he finds out that Cunégonde has become ugly. He falls out of love with her therefore, signifying his love for Cunégonde was never legit. To prove his point, Voltaire uses pointed satire directed at various organizations and groups prevalent in his time period. In particular, Voltaire takes aim at organized religion, in particular Catholicism, as well as aristocratic arrogance and war. All of Voltaire’s comments are precisely chosen to convey his point that those in power were completely corrupt in all their thoughts and actions.
Conflict is constant. It is everywhere. It exists within one’s own mind, different desires fighting for dominance. It exists outside in nature, different animals fighting for the limited resources available, and it exists in human society, in the courts. It can occur subtly, making small changes that do not register consciously, and it can occur directly and violently, the use of pure strength, whether physical, social, economic, or academic, to assert dominance and achieve one’s goals; this is the use of force. Yet, with the use of force, the user of force is destined to be one day felled by it. “He who lives by the sword will die by the sword.”
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton proves the point that violence can be justified if necessary. To inflict change in their lives people often fight with violence instead of peace to evoke change. The world strives for change everyday whether or not you like it. How the people create a change in society whether they use peace or war, it is up to them to decide how to modify our ever changing world. Violence and fight between the Socs and Greasers tells us that both can be justified if it inflicts positive change in society. ‘
There are two vastly differing works of literature that employ similar elements of satire, whether the story is long or short, essay or novella. In these two works, the authors bring light to ongoing social, political, and philosophical issues of their time and age. The two works I am referring to are Jonathan Swift’s satirical essay, A Modest Proposal, and Voltaire’s novella, Candide, or Optimism. In both A Modest Proposal and Candide, there is a portrayal of irony, cold logic and reasoning rather than emotion, and misguided philosophy. Exploring the issues within these texts can implement a better understanding of not only the literature itself, but also the historical context and the issues of the time. By delving even deeper into these works, one will begin to see the connection that can be made between these texts.
Brenda Shoshanna once stated, “All conflict we experience in the world, is a conflict within our own selves.” This quote recognizes how much conflict influences our everyday lives and personality. The wise words were especially true for Gene, the main character in A separate peace, who let his battles with other characters and the society of his time become his own internal battles. In John Knowles’s novel, A separate peace, all the types of conflict are shown through the main character Gene.

Beyond his written work Voltaire was an outspoken advocate for the freedom of religion, expression, and the separation of church and state. He used his versatile literary work as a tool to criticize the Catholic Church and overall intolerant French society. Voltaire’s cynical writing reached its highest potential in his rapid-fire satire Candide, or Optimism. Voltaire's use of satire, and its techniques of exaggeration and contrast highlight the evil and brutality of war and the world in general when men are meekly accepting of their fate.

In its time, satire was a powerful tool for political assault on Europe's corrupt and deteriorating society. Voltaire's Candide uses satire to vibrantly and sarcastically portray optimism, a philosophical view from the Enlightenment used to bury the horrors of 18th century life: superstition, sexually transmitted diseases, aristocracy, the church, tyrannical rulers, civil and religious wars, and the cruel punishment of the innocent.
When one hears the word violence one typically thinks of sordid images. This is because violence has developed a negative connotation. When one thinks of violent acts or cruel methods like coercion it is frequently correlated with evil. But there are instances in which there is a need to commit brutalities in order to put an end to catastrophes and help the good prevail. Many posit the notion that nothing good will ever come from violence while neglecting the positive things that have emerged from it. It may seem illogical but since kindness is often abused one needs to resort to violent means to demand justice and peace. Violence is gradually converting into a virtue as it becomes an imperative component in making progressive reforms. In order for one to triumph one must be dauntingly assertive even if it means turning to violence. Using forceful tactics should not necessarily make one malicious if the reasons behind them are benevolent. Violent acts are justified as long as they’re done for the greater good, solve disputes, and serve justice. And what better way to prove this than with legit historical facts.
The Art of War has been used quite frequently throughout the years by many intelligent leaders and scholars. The day of its origin is still unknown, as well as who actually wrote it. It is believe that a Chinese military leader named Sun Tzu is the author, but people nowadays begin to question if he actually existed. Some people say it is a collection of Chinese military strategies that were passed down generation from generation. Whatever the origin of these teaching is, it is clear that whoever developed these tactics was an extremely wise individual. Not only does The Art of War show us amazing strategies to use in war but a new way of viewing, and living our lives. We can use all of Sun Tzu’s basic principles in our everyday lives, which makes these teaching even more unique.
