The topic discussed in this paper is for the use of performance enhancing drugs (PEDs). With today’s modern science and medical advances, PEDs shouldn’t be banned for general purposes and/or in sports. PEDs have a bad reputation in the sports world because it is commonly viewed as “cheating” and might give a slight advantage among competitors. PEDs also receive a bad reputation for various health concerns from abusers. Anyone from normal persons to professional athletes should have the right to choose if they want to use PEDs. Rather it be under medical supervision or self-administration, a person should have that right to do so. Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), is plagued with an abundance of PED users. Those PEDs can range anywhere from AAS to GH also to include a slew of cognitive drugs like, Ritalin (methylphenidate). Ritalin is a central nervous system stimulant used to treat patients who suffer from attention deficit disorder (ADD) and/or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Fighters in the sport of MMA use Ritalin to sharpen their cognitive skills by masking fatigue, masking pain, and increases arousal. Having those masked while during high performance activity can potentially lead to better focus and/or performance. Since Ritalin has those effects on users, most major sports organizations have banned the use of it because of potentially giving a competitor an unfair advantage. Ritalin, unlike AAS and GH, only affects the cognitive attributes of sports performance, where AAS and GH effect the physical attributes of sports performance. Since either PED can potentially give competitors a slight unfair advantage in their respective sport, major sports organization has deemed those PEDs banned and cheating when their players are subjective to drug testing.
