In the Hunger Games the Capitol is the higher power in the hierarchy. The capitol’s peacekeepers are all shown as men. The peacekeepers keep everyone in line, the same way gods keep the humans in the Iliad inline. President Snow, the “top dog” male in the Hunger Games, exemplifies importance and is known as the all powerful and mighty King, like Zeus. The men and women outside of president snow receive similar social standards. In the districts, the men and women work and take care of the children at home. In the Capitol, the women are equal to the men from the point of view seen by the readers.

The movie The Hunger Games, originally based on a book by Suzanne Collins, is about a place called Panem, which is ruled by the Capitol and has 12 districts within it. These 12 districts are separated founded on their economic statuses, meaning the higher the district, the more impoverished the residents are. There are 2 tributes that are chosen to participate, forcibly, in The Hunger Games each year. Each competitor is instructed to eliminate one another in order to survive and come out on top. There is only one tribute allowed to come out of the arena alive. Katniss lives in District 12, which is the most impoverished district of them all, and she volunteers as tribute in “the Reaping” when her sister is chosen to participate. She and the other tribute from her district, Peeta, make it into the arena with the hopes that one of them comes out the winner and above all else, alive (Ross, 2012). The main source of power in the hunger games is very clear showing that the government in this case the capitol how they use their power to control power. This is because the Capitol holds the most of the country’s money and wealth. The Capitol there is able to control what happens, when it happens and how much it costs. For example in the book Katniss has put her name down for the reaping as everyone else do too. ‘The rules of the Hunger Games are simple. In punishment for the uprising, each 12 districts must provide a boy and a girl, called tributes, to participate.’ This quote from the book shows how the Capitol has made a law that they punish the districts because they were all smothered to bits and district 13 has been fully destroyed by the Capitols army. Although this book shows how Katniss resists the kinds of power against the capitol for example. How she salutes into the air in the games and everybody sees or when Rue dies and Katniss cover her with flowers. These symbolic gestures create attention to the fact that there are actual people out there in the hunger games not just game holograms. These small moments of truth and reality.
In “The Lottery,” Mrs. Hutchinson says, “`It isn’t fair,’ she said. A stone hit her on the side of the head” (Jackson 7). Mrs. Hutchinson does not even try to get away, she only stands there and lets the townspeople kill her. She does not try to stand up to her society at all and she shows how she does not even try to change her fate. She only stands still and does not try to get away. Though these stories both have a female protagonist, The Hunger Games has a protagonist who stands up to her society in time to save herself. In The Hunger Games, the main character, Katniss, is one of the two participants still alive at the end of The Hunger Games. She and her fellow district mate, Peeta Mellark, are both still alive. The government says only one of them may win. Katniss convinces Peeta to eat deadly berries. They are just about to eat the berries when they are both declared the winners. Katnisss is reacting to the rule change. She is showing how she is not going to stand by and let the government control her. Katniss shows people should stand up for what they believe in and to not give into their society and to not be controlled. Both of the stories have a female protagonist differing how and when they stand up for themselves.
The book The Hunger Games is full of critical scenes. A critical scene is a type of scene that is necessary for the book to have a story. One very important critical scene is when Prim was chosen at the reaping. When she was chosen Katniss decided to take her place as a tribute. Why did Katniss take her place? What could have happened if she didn't take her place?

In our Society when you don't follow the rules, you become an outcast to the rest of the society. Suzanne Collins’ novel series, The Hunger Games criticizes our society and its demands for people of specific genders to act in certain ways and become certain things. Stereotypes concerning gender are prevalent in our society and all over the world. However, The Hunger Games gives a very refreshing tone of “mockery” to these stereotypes. Katniss Everdeen isn’t your typical 16 year old girl, and neither is Peeta Mellark a typical 16 year old boy, especially when they are fighting everyday just to survive. The Hunger Games is a work of social commentary, used to convince us that there can’t and shouldn’t be any defined “roles” based on gender. A mixture of “stereo-typical” gender roles within a person and their actions is what people need just to survive in our world that is changing every day.
Genre The genre of this novel is dystopian. Dystopian is a state in which everything is unpleasant or bad. This is seen in the novel when the boys try to establish order but it doesn’t work out and everything starts to go downhill. The TV shows Lost was inspired by the novel because they have a presence of a beast on the island which was significant in the novel. Power when spread unequally leads to the powerful implementing brutal methods to manipulate those lacking in power. The pyramids of power found in both series are extremely similar. Snow represents the “president” of the capitol. He makes all of the major decisions and tells the lower inhabitants what they should or shouldn’t do. Just below him are the citizens of the capitol. They represent the doctors, lawyers, and other professionals of modern day America. Individuals who complete these tasks appear to belong to the upper class and hold a majority of the wealth for a nation. Next, the higher districts in The Hunger Games hold the jobs that are essential for the society to thrive, yet do not hold a substantial amount of wealth. I compare these people to the middle class of our society. Lastly, the final few districts in The Hunger Games handle the down and dirty tasks, similar to the lower class. 1984 portrays big brother and the inner party as the heads of their hierarchy. The outer party exists just outside of big brother and the inner party, handling the important jobs. These include, but are not limited to, erasing previous history, manufacturing important materials, and finding the people who go against big brother. Racism related shootings are becoming more apparent and frequent. Ferguson, Mo. being the most notorious of these deadly shooting. Police law-enforcement has show signs of disproportionately targeting African Americans in things such as traffic stops. Also few can deny the risk for a black person to be shot in a police shooting then a white person due to the overwhelming percentages.
