Imagine you are in a situation where your brother has just killed two boys and your mother has left you to marry another man. In the story, Peace Like a River by Leif Enger, the main character Reuben copes with the realities of the unkind world he lives in. Unfortunately, Reuben is put into this very poor situation time and time again throughout the story. Reuben’s father was fired by his boss in front of the whole school, finding out that his brother intentionally shot two boys he knows Israel Finch and Tommy Basca and he sees his father very sick and frail with pneumonia, all contribute to why he sees the world as such a harsh place to live in. First and foremost, Mr. Holgren unjustly fires his father Jeremiah, who is a janitor while all the kids in his school are watching. At that time, Reuben declared: “He roared a few words, and dad became the former janitor” (Enger 79). When Reuben heard the superintendent yelling at his father and getting ready to fire him, he became extremely humiliated and embarrassed. It was even worse since the superintendent puts him in a position where he knew he would not be able to defend himself. His father being accused of such severe allegations as being drunk and not doing his job properly was devastating for Reuben to hear. After Davy murdered the two boys, he emphasizes: “Don’t say it’s all right, Rube, don’t say it. I meant to do it. I meant to. Hear me?” (Enger 51). At this moment, Reuben must come to the realization that his brother meant to do it and it was not out of self-defense. This was a premeditated act, and he did not want to see the two boys alive any longer.
