What is the best possible way to control mosquito’s in the Pawnee, OK area? There are not many choices because of the small population and the large area of land within the area. One of the best choices the town of Pawnee has available is Malathion. 1 “Malathion is an insecticide in the chemical family known as organophosphates” Malathion is mainly used to control a wide variety of insects from gardens and homes. Not only is Malathion used for a pesticide, it can be found in many special shampoos to treat lice. Usually brief exposure occurs when a person does not wash their hands and ingests Malathion by food or drink. 5 The next step of the risk assessment is dose response. 6 Dose response describes “how the likelihood and severity of adverse health effects (the responses) are related to the amount and condition of exposure to an agent (the dose provided)” Studies were done on lab rats and the results showed that only high dosages of Malathion cause liver cancer in the rats. The EPA has determined that there is not enough physical evidence to determine whether or not Malathion is deadly to humans. 5 The third step of the risk assessment is exposure assessment. 7 Exposure assessment is “the process of measuring or estimating the magnitude, frequency, and duration of human exposure to an agent in the environment, or estimating future exposures for an agent that has not yet been released” The expected amount of people to be affected in the town of Pawnee is very small.
