Participation Awards Essay

There are many heated debates raging in modern day America, but what is perhaps the most underrated of these debates is the topic of participation awards. Not only these awards, but more so what they represent in handouts, for lack of a better term, is what makes this such a pertinent topic. I agree, perhaps even more strongly, with Kevin Sherrington’s views expressed in his article. The overuse of participation awards amongst todays youth sports are in fact detrimental to their competitive spirit, therefore harmful to their overall ambition. Kevin Sherrington writes a very interesting article, “Kids Need to Earn Hardware,” on the uniquely timely debate of the value of participation awards. What once was a country driven by the allure of the American Dream per hard work is now void, replaced by the free loading lifestyle adopted by many today. And while some may find a correlation of sports participation trophies and government handouts a stretch, I believe just the opposite. Such awards given out at such an early age at an alarming rate is detrimental to the once great American spirit. While these trophies can provide a sense of accomplishment through he comraderie of team competition, it can also quickly diminish the competitive spirit of the youth. I personally do not display any of my participation awards for the exact reason that everyone has one. A kid may literally never show up to any team event or activity, yet they know that they will still not only recognized as a member of their respective team, but even be awarded for absolutely no reason. This can easily develop a lifestyle pattern as said child can just as easily go through life with the same attitude of expecting a handout of a graduation diploma, for example, then live the rest of their life on the handouts of food stamps, an action detrimental to those that were determined to not live a life of mere
