It is profitable for teens/young adults to read Sherman Alexie’s compelling novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, even if it deals with sophisticated topics that may be disappointing to some. Because it describes the challenges of some that have to use survival techniques to live in both worlds which is important for some to know how to help or are considering moving out of bad environments. In this novel Junior, the main character in which the story is told from, lives in a bad environment and decides to move schools to bring hope to his people but faces criticism, his own people turning his back on him, loss of people, not enough support, racism, and poverty. Through comics drawn by Junior, Alexie persuades the audience to pay attention to individuals that that are forced to use survival techniques in two worlds with racism, loss, and poverty. Junior towards the middle section of the is faced with a conflict of getting to and from school everyday but his determination gets him there. When Junior explains that he sometimes has to walk home or to school twenty-two miles because he usually doesn’t have a ride, “Junior gets to school” comic (88). In this comic Junior evokes the audience to care about his problem with poverty and how it affects his school experience because he has to sometimes walk to school for twenty-two miles which could take up to 9 hours to walk, because his family never has enough money for gas. It also shows that Junior uses determination, one of his survival techniques, to get home and get to school. Meanwhile, Junior’s poverty at home is always covered up by lying to pretend he is part of the white people’s world at Reardon.
