Nichole Flerchinger 4/30/14 UCOLL 497-5 Final Paper Case Study #1 Being a part of the paraprofessional team requires that I be knowledgeable on how to handle all kinds of difficult scenarios. Case study number one presents a possible situation that a Resident Advisor may have to deal with. There are many steps and processes involved in solving some problems that paraprofessionals will encounter. Case study number one presents an issue between the members of a community government. It is important to recognize though, that there is much more hidden beneath the few problems that seem to have surfaced. These issues may appear as much less on the surface, but beneath each problem, lies much deeper roots. These roots are what must be dealt with in order to do a thorough job of taking care of the issues at hand. The group in case study number one entails a predominantly freshman, community government for a co-ed residence hall. To appropriately evaluate any issues that may be surfacing, I will first have to address where the group is at developmentally. Since the members of this group are mainly freshmen, this is extremely helpful in defining where they are at developmentally. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and the Multiple Dimensions of Identity helped me categorize where the students currently stand, as far as development goes. In any situation is crucial to understand that everyone matures at different levels, and people mentally develop at different stages of their lives. After observing the issues at hand, I think it safe to note that most of the students on the community government place their internal and external dimensions as something of upmost value in their lives, according to the Multiple Dimensions of Identity model (2007, ... ... middle of paper ... ... After about a month, let the members of the community government take the course on its own. After two months, confirm once again that everything is still running smoothly, everyone is still getting along, and that no new issues have arisen. It is important to catch a problem at its earliest, then you can vanquish it much more efficiently. There are always going to be obstacles to overcome, as a paraprofessional. It is extremely vital to be knowledgeable on how to handle all of different kinds of scenarios. Case study number one presents one of the many possible situations that could take place in a residence hall. Washington State University offers numerous resources and there are multiple processes that can help take care of abundant types of hurdles. As long as the situation is given time, work, and patience, the issues will be taken by the roots and dissolved.
