What makes a character a hero? Does the hero have to be benevolent? To be a hero, a character must stand out from others, venture out on a journey, and is involved with the supernatural for aid or as an adversary. Heroes, by definition do not need to do good works to be heroic. John Milton challenges his audience with the heroic character of Satan in the epic poem Paradise Lost. Milton’s Satan fulfills the characteristics of the epic hero but suffers from tragic flaws. Also, he proficiently uses rhetorical devices to achieve his goals across Heaven, Chaos, and Hell. Satan demonstrates the powerful influence he holds over the other fallen angels by persuading Beelzebub to help him plan a way to avenge their banishment from Heaven. He utilizes logical arguments to alleviate Beelzebub’s concerns about further punishment by assigning their new purpose of perverting all that is good to evil. The two fiends compare the consequences of each action; however Satan authoritatively concludes the discussion saying: “Here we may reign secure, and in my choice / To reign is worth ambition though in Hell: / Better to reign in Hell, then serve in Heav'n” (I. 261-263). The success of the tragic hero is influenced by his ability to persuade others to do his bidding, not only through logic, but his credibility as well. The guardians of the gates of Hell, Sin and Death, are turned from their duties to helping Satan through his alluring speech. Satan utilizes the trust of Sin and Death to manipulate them for his purposes. He convinces the two spirits to allow him passage out of Hell by making a deal. He promises them the ability to torment God’s creation when he is finished: “To know, and this once known, shall soon return, / And bring ye to the place where Thou and Death / Shall dwell at ease, . . . there ye shall be fed and fill'd / Immeasurably, all things shall be your prey” (II. 839-841, …show more content…

He possesses classical heroic qualities of unique power, completing a treacherous odyssey, and confronts the supernatural forces of God. He is a tragic hero because of he is vengeful, arrogant, and a megalomaniac. Satan uses rhetoric to gain power and persuade others to do his bidding. He is not benevolent and his vulnerability is his completely self-serving nature. However his lack of humility does not prevent him from being a hero.
