Papua New Guinea Nurses
THE Papua New Guinea Nurses Association (PNGNA) wants the Departments of Labour and Employment and Health to shut down the Lorengau hospital.
Their call is based on the report of a health inspection conducted by the Department of Labour and Employment in February this year which condemned the hospital.
The February health inspection followed a safety inspection request by PNGNA in November last year.
In a letter to the Acting Secretary, Occupational Health and Safety, Liga Tanu, the safety and technical officer who inspected the hospital, Michael Suanika, said he "strongly ecommended that the Lorengau Public Hospital be closed for an indefinite period until such a time when the defects are rectified and/or maintained to a satisfactory level".
Among twenty of the defects he listed were:
* Hospital's operating theatre's air condition not fully functioning;
* Anaesthetic machine not working;
* Only one steriliser available;
* Only one fire extinguisher which was last serviced in 1997;
* No stand-by generator;
* In-built toilets for very sick in-patients and staff members have been without readily available water for the last 10 years or so;
* All hospital wastes are discarded into wheely bins then to the waste disposal site;
* Surrounding bushes used as toilets; and
* Wash and hand basins without readily available water supply for the last 10 years or so.
He said: "Instead of the medical staff administering curation of patients, they are indirectly worsening their ill-health with the situation they are in (e.g. cross-infection of diseases) from one patient to another through the medical staff."
He said to hear of such inadequate and insufficient services provided at the hospi...

The excluded law students are concerned about their education and are meeting all legal costs themselves to ensure justice is done.

This report aims to provide a better understanding of the Western Australian Department of Education (WA DoE) Duty of Care for Students Policy by discussing its rationale, the issues covered, its importance and who is subject to its requirements. It will also discuss the implications and applications of the policy in relation to three scenarios.
In conclusion, the death of Mr. Ard was the result of negligent behavior by the on duty nurse. If the nurse would have followed standard policies and procedures the patient outcome would have been different. This would include being more attentive to the patient’s call button, as well as, performing standard respiratory tests given the patient’s condition. There was also a failure to properly review documentation, and add new notations to patient’s medical chart as needed. In the end, the court of appeals should have found the hospital negligent in the death of Mr. Ard.
...as not required to await the outcome of criminal proceedings against the students before taking their own actions against them (Goldberg v. The Regents).
This is counterproductive towards the patients’ own recovery from the ward to a normal life
Nurses as part of regulated health care practitioners are responsible and accountable to abide by the standards, codes and guidelines of nursing practice (NMBA, 2016). The nurse in the case study has breached the standard 1.4 of the Registered nurse standards for practice. According to standard 1.4 the registered nurse should comply with "legislation, regulation, policies, guidelines and other standards or requirements relevant to the context of practice” when making decisions because this will be the foundation of the nurse in delivering high quality services (NMBA, 2016). The nurse in the scenario did not follow the hospital policy concerning “Between the Flags” or “red zone” and a doctor should be notified in this condition. Furthermore, the nurse failed to effectively respond to a deteriorating
However, we are looking at a case study where patients safety has been compromised, professionalism has been voided, lack of communication, nurses aren’t liable for their work, the duty of care has been breached and lot more issues can be discovered. Which will be incorporated in this paper. Looking at the patient Christopher Hammett
In saying 1.5 million Americans have witnessed hospital errors in the care of the medical center or even 40,000-100,000 deaths is a ridiculous amount of faults. Errors should be minimized, especially when dealing with people’s lives. The number of deaths is so high hospitals should take notice and really pinpoint where their facility is miscalculating and create in-service training to all employees and not just the ones that are making the errors but all employees. This will decrease the chances of errors made in the hospital. With continuous training every month there can be a huge change in the number of mistakes. The fact that these inaccuracies are even causing deaths really highlight the importance of the need for a change. Families
INTRODUCTION There are many things that affect a student’s enrolment as a nurse the student must be competent in the many registration standards that the Nursing Midwifery Board of Australia have set. The stigmas attached to students with Impairments and or Criminal histories and the ineligibility to register. Nursing is defined by the International Council of Nursing (2014) as collaborative care of individual’s any age health or ill of all communities, groups, in all situations. Health promotion, illness prevention and the care of unwell, disabled and dying people are included in the nursing practice. Encouraging a safe environment, research, contributing to shape health policies and health systems management, and education are also key nursing
The nursing shortage most likely does not mean a great deal to people until they are in the care of a nurse. The United States is in a severe nursing shortage with no relief in sight due to many factors compounding the problem and resulting in compromised patient care and nurse burnout. Nursing shortages have been experienced in the past by the United States and have been overcome with team effort. However, the current shortage is proving to be the most complex and great strides are being made to defeat the crisis before it becomes too difficult to change. Researchers anticipate that by 2010, the United States will need almost one million more registered nurses than will be available (Cherry & Jacob, 2005, p. 30).
“Registered nurses treat patients and help prevent disease, educate patients and the public about various medical conditions and health issues, and provide advice and emotional support to patients’ family members both physically and mentally.”(Registered). It is important for the individual going into this occupation to search out the pros and cons of the different areas of nursing. Sometimes gender plays a part in choosing the specific area of an RN. For instance, the strength of males is needed in areas of physical therapy. While the gentle attributes of women are needed in the care of babies. “A nurse must like people and want to help them, and must also have self-reliance and good judgment, patience, honesty, responsibility, and ability to work easily with others.”(Jacobi). The occupation of a registered nurse includes many advantages such as having the ability to assist your family in medical needs, the salary is attractive and above the average scale, and it offers great job security.
A registered nurse is a critical piece of the support system for injured and sick patients. Nurses are greatly valued in the health care system because they have many and varied responsibilities within hospitals and clinics, including: patient care, administration of medications; communication with other health care providers, patients and patients’ families; and education of patients, family members, and new nurses in training (Isaac, 2014).
Nurses are considered the backbone of the hospital due to their hours of hard work and determination to help patients. Being a nurse is a great opportunity for people to show the world what they can do and to put themselves out there to make a difference. A nursing career can help you to become more confident in yourself. There are many types of nurses but we will be focusing on Registered Nurses(RN) because RN’s are the main connection between the doctors and the patients. Registered Nurses have long hours, many daily duties, and even influence the other nurses by guiding them in their career. However, they are rewarded with a good salary, and the thought knowing that they saved lives that day.
Approximately 844 million people (one tenth of the population) in the world do not have access to clean and 2.3 billion do not have access to a decent toilet. This poor sanitation and contaminated water quality is the cause of death for over 289 000 children under the age of 5 every year.
The combination of safe drinking water and hygienic sanitation facilities is a precondition for health and for success in the fight against poverty, hunger, child deaths and gender inequality. UNICEF works in more than 90 countries around the world to improve water supplies and sanitation facilities in schools and communities, and to promote safe hygiene practices. All UNICEF water and sanitation programmes are designed to contribute to the Millennium Development Goal for water and sanitation: to halve, by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe water and basic sanitation. Key strategies for meeting the water, sanitation and hygiene challenges are to:
Separate cleaning equipment shall be provided for use in toilets, public areas and external areas. (Unsure)
