A glow stick is a self-reliant, instant light source. It consists of a translucent plastic tube containing secluded substances when combined can produce light. It does not require any extra external energy sources. The light cannot be turned off after it is “lite”, but it is said that glow sticks can actually be used again by putting it in the freezer overnight then cracking it once more. Glow sticks are used in many ways some for emergency settings, recreation, entertainment, and in the military because they are portable and easy to activate. If you have seen a glow stick you will know that it is quite fascinating how the tube lights up with the bright glow. But just how exactly is that possible?
For new or retrofit construction, every choice can lead to energy savings; energy that is derived primarily from fossil fuels. The typical household LED replacement for a 60w light lasts about 50,000 hours. Pretending that an incandescent could also last that long, it would consume about 3,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy whereas the LE...
...les were replaced by fluorescent lights and light bulbs as major light sources, the candle making industry is still burning bright. Candles in varying colours, shapes and sizes are still manufactured and used in different manners like in religious ceremonies, birthday celebrations, aromatherapy, and home decorations.
It started with the British, with the arc lamp in 1835. For years after people around the world experimented on an incandescent lamp. They tried things like filling the bulb with gas but they did not last very long and they were very expensive. Finally in 1879, Thomas Edison made a bamboo filament (the part of the bulb that actually makes the light) that was able to last 1,200 hours. Lighting has changed over the years but some of the new inventions still were made in the 1800’s. Glassblower Heinrich Geissler and physician Julius Plücker discovered that they could make light by removing almost all of the air from a long glass tube and by passing an electrical current through it. They called it the Geissler tube. In the early 1900’s Peter Cooper Hewitt made the fluorescent lamp. While the Cooper Hewitt lamps were more efficient than incandescent bulbs, no one really used them because of the blue green color of the light. European researchers made neon tubes coated with phosphors (that made the light white). In the mid and late 1930s the U.S. was showing the fluorescent lights to the navy and at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. These lights lasted longer and were about three times more efficient than incandescent bulbs. In 1976, Edward Hammer at General Electric figured out how to bend the fluorescent tube into a spiral shape, creating the first compact fluorescent light
...sed using a spectroscope. Neon is often used in signs because of its production of an unmistakable bright reddish-orange light. Although still referred to as "neon", other colors are generated with the variety of noble gases and by various colors of fluorescent lighting. Neon is also used in vacuum tubes, high-voltage indicators, lightning arrestors, wave meter tubes, television tubes, and helium neon lasers. When Neon is liquefied it is commercially used as a cryogenic refrigerant and the lower temperature range becomes more attainable with more the extreme liquid helium refrigeration. Neon both as a gas and a liquid are relatively expensive for example; the price of liquid neon even in small quantities can be more than 55 times that of liquid helium. The reason for neon's expense is because of neon’s rarity which unlike helium, can only be obtained from the air.
In Wide Sargasso Sea, Jean Rhys explored the origins of Bertha Antoinetta Rochester, the madwoman in the attic from Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre. Reimagined by Rhys as Antoinette Cosway Mason, Sargasso Sea documents Antoinette’s troubled adolescence and her eventual descent into apparent insanity. Rhys’ choice to investigate the life of a character who was already doomed to a tragic end focuses the informed reader on the development of Antoinette’s madness, and a potential explanation for her inevitable fate. In this essay, I will investigate one key aspect of Antoinette’s fragile state, the complex ethnic identity she forms during her adolescence, particularly in regards to her childhood friendship with Tia, and how that confused identity relates to her tragic end. A victim of many circumstances beyond her control, Antoinette’s identification with both Black and White culture fractures her sense of self, alienates her from both, and is an important factor to how she is degraded by her husband. Between the upheaval of post-emancipation Jamaica and her own ever-changing social position, Antoinette finds herself, “caught between two cultures… but never able to identify fully with either.” (Kadhim 2011) This incomplete sense of self is incompatible with the world she lived in, and, in combination with her inability to control her own destiny, it informs her disastrous marriage and the eventual abuse and imprisonment she suffers from her husband, leading to madness, and her tragic fate.
I did my primary source analysis assignment on the song “Born in the U.S.A” by singer and songwriter Bruce Springsteen. After listening to this song I analyzed what I thought that it meant. This song has a very clear meaning. It is an anti-War song, speaking of the memories and heavy heartache of a man returning from War after experiencing a personal loss not just as a citizen but also as a recruit. This song describes how he was unemployable for "doing the right thing". Springsteen basically wrote this song about the problems Vietnam veterans tend to encounter when they returned to America after serving their time. Vietnam was the first war the United States did not win. While veterans of other wars received a hero's welcome and a nice pat on the back, those who fought in Vietnam were very much ignored when they returned to back to the United States.
The pH of the common household substances did have a few recognisable patterns. Almost all of the substances ranged from pH levels of 4-8, with only 2 with high acid levels. We tested lemon juice which had a pH level of 2, making it a strong acid. I expect that most other food items would have a higher pH level to avoid damage to the mouth and throat during/after consumption. Lemon juice contains citric and ascorbic acid (vitamin c)
One of my great difficulties with Kant's moral philosophy is that it suggests that our moral obligations leave us helpless when dealing with evil. “Kant's theory sets a high ideal of conduct and tells us to live up to that ideal regardless of what other persons are doing.” Imagine you are a character in a Shakespearean play and are watching your father getting murdered. He is the King and you aspire that one day you will take his place (Even though you know it won’t happen, because you’re a woman). Your brother takes the initiate to kill him and take his place. I’m sure you would not be thinking oh, it’s fine that he killed your father because being king is a great thing and it doesn’t matter how or why he got there. Most likely you’d be thinking to yourself: How can he become king by murdering my father? This is horrible and unjust. He does not have the entitlement to be king. Even though the people will accept him as king, but know the way he acquired this position was through murder. And they would pretend to like him, but out of fear or resentment, depending, perhaps, if the previous king was good or bad. If your brother had waited to become king, rather than murdering his own father to become king, then the means that he used to get to the end would’ve been better and the people would most likely have accepted him.

In Chinua Achebe’s novel, Things Fall Apart, the traditional Ibo tribe is a very effective and lasting culture. They are the first to introduce many systems and traditions that we still use in society today. One of the major things the Ibo tribe introduces is the judial system, respect during conversation, hospitality, strength and masculinity. In Things Fall Apart, the author wants us to understand the Ibo tribe and feel sympathy for them, including Okonkwo.
Based on our assessment of Talbot County, Georgia, we believe the following two community nursing diagnoses are valid for members of the community: physical inactivity related to lack of knowledge as manifested by Talbot County’s obesity rate of 34.7% and physical inactivity related to limited community resources as manifested by lack of safe exercise facilities, sidewalks and parks with walking trails. While both community nursing diagnoses are pertinent to Talbot County, we believe physical inactivity related to lack of knowledge as manifested by Talbot County’s obesity rate of 34.7% would be given the first priority. Without any understanding of the importance of physical activity community resources may not be utilized. Therefore, educating the community on the importance of physical activity cannot be stressed enough. Based on a study conducted, knowledge deficits were linked to a lack of physical activity in socially disadvantaged communities (Clark, 1998). Unfortunately, rural communities tend to have lower education levels (Clark, 1998). Rural Georgians are less likely than their counterparts to complete high school or to complete a bachelor’s degree (Vinson, 2013). In Talbot County, only 47.2% of the population graduated from high school, 20.6% had some college or an associate’s degree, and only 5.1% had a bachelor’s degree (Vinson, 2013). Also contributing to the lack of knowledge on the importance of physical activity is limited community health resources to facilitate adequate health education on lifestyle activities that promote physical activity within Talbot. Talbot County’s Health Department consists of only one nurse daily and a nurse practitioner who is only available on...
Before lights were placed on trees, candles were used instead. It is widely believed that Martin Luther, the 16th Century Protestant founder, first added candles to trees. He was walking home on a winter night while writing a sermon, when he saw the stars shining above the evergreen trees. He noticed how beautiful the view looked, and in order to recreate it for his family, he placed lighted candles on his family’s Christmas tree. An inventor named Edward Hibberd Johnson hired Thomas Edison, then a 24 year old inventor, who later created the lightbulb. After Thomas Edison patented the light bulb in 1880, Johnson invested money in Edison’s bulbs and later used them to fashion Christmas lights. He recognized that candles are a fire hazard, and lights would provide a safer alternative. Johnson wired 80 light bulbs of three colors and strung them around his tree. The beautiful, bright tree attracted newspaper reporters and pedestrians who continued to come back each year. In 1894, President Cleveland put lights on the White House tree for the first time. The first set of lights was released to the public in 1900 and priced at $12 or $350 in today’s money. In 1914, the sale price for a 16 ft string of lights decreased to $1.75. Today, 150 million light sets are sold, and 80 million homes are decorated each year which equates to 6% of the United State’s electrical load each
