The fifth leading cause of death in the U.S. is stroke. A stroke occurs when the blood flow of the brain is cut off, which leaves the brain cells deprived of oxygen that the brain needs to stay functioning. It depends of how severe the stroke is but it most likely causes loss of speech, movement, and memory. There are many different factors that can lead to stoke and yes, one of them is chronic stress. Levels of stress can vary in different situations. It can be short-term (acute) or long-term (chronic). According to Flint Rehab, the five major stress factors are in personal health problems, careers, relationships, and/or finances. As the stress can either increase or decrease it still have risk factors individuals deal with. These major stress factors are most likely going to be associated with middle age and older adults. Long-term chronic stress can lead to stroke because of all the tension in the body. If an individual is impatient, aggressive, or quick tempered then the link between stress and stroke is at a greater risk than individuals who are patient and calm. The long-term chronic stress can cause a stroke due the risk factors that are provoked. The risk factors that can increase the chances of a stroke include high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and smoking. The stress hormones increase an individual’s blood pressure and when it is long-term it can lead to a stroke. High levels of stress can also cause blood sugar levels to rise dramatically, which leads to diabetes and high cholesterol levels. Smoking is a popular coping mechanism for stress and it is a high leading cause of stroke. Work-related stress has a huge correlation with stroke when it is chronic. Go watch your favorite movie with someone you want to spend time with or get a massage, whatever it is enjoy yourself and have fun.
