Hairspray was first released as a film in 1988, and it was later adapted into a musical in the early 2000’s by Shaiman and Whitman. Shaiman wrote the music, and Whitman wrote the lyrics. The musical won eight tony awards out of thirteen nominations. It was even awarded for Best Musical. The first musical ran for 2,642 performances. Hairspray first opened at the Neil Simon Theatre on August 15, 2002, directed by Jack O’Brien and Jerry Mitchell as choreographer. David Rockwell designed the set, and William Ivey Long designed costumes. Lighting was done by Kenneth Posner, and sound was designed by Steve C. Kennedy. Paul Huntley created the many iconic wigs. It was a box office success. The film currently has a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 81% on Metacritic. Generations after generations of people love the story of Tracy Turnblad and the unjust doings of the Corny Collins’ Show. There is a version of the story for everyone. People from all over the globe can watch and enjoy the triumphant acceptance of both large people and those of color. I chose to write my paper on Hairspray, because it is nostalgic for me. I can remember watching it around the time it came out, and the story is just too relevant to not admire and cherish. Sadly, younger generations are still having to learn how to treat others correctly, but I am glad that there are films, music, and broadway shows like Hairspray to be the force behind that changing of mindsets. I hope that many more people can listen to and understand stories like Tracy’s and Motormouth Maybelle’s.
It is no surprise that Hairspray was as successful as it was, because it touches on subject matter that will always resonate with the audience.
