Biometrics is the science and technology of measuring and analyzing biological data. Instead of using something you possess like a key or something you know like a password, biometrics uses who you are to identify you. Biometric technology is used for automatic personal recognition based on human body characteristics such as fingerprint, iris, face, palm print, hand geometry, vascular pattern, and voice for authentication purposes. Biometric systems can also use behavioral characteristics—gait, signature, typing pattern for identification purposes. The oldest of these methods is fingerprinting. Fingerprinting has been utilized for over a century by law enforcement officials who use these unique characteristics to keep track of criminals. Regarding the biometric systems, individuals are critics and advocates of the technology for their own set of reasons. Implementation of biometric systems is becoming increasingly common in corporate and public security systems, consumer electronics and point of sale systems.
Biometric systems seem complicated, however they all take the same identical steps: Enrollment, Storage and Comparison. Enrollment refers to first time you use a biometric system, and it records basic information about the sample, such as your name or an identification number. Afterwards, it captures an image or recording of one’s specific trait. During the data Storage, the systems analyze a trait and translate it into a code or graph. Some systems also record this data onto a card that can be carried with a person. Another discrepancy between actual forensics and how it is portrayed in the media is the availability of information in databases. There is only a small percentage of the entire population’s fingerprints or DNA samples stored within databases such as the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS). This makes finding a match between a DNA sample or fingerprint difficult, as a match would only be found if the person’s information was already stored within the database. If there is no match previously stored in a database, the fingerprint or DNA sample could be potentially rendered useless within a trial. As the years went on in times of slavery, and especially during post-emancipation times, obeah gained more of a reputation as witchcraft or sorcery and it was said that it was used to bring harm to people (Bilby 153). The positive aspects of obeah were soon paid minimal attention, and the negative aspects and disapproving stereotypes were on the rise. The negativity was so prevalent and contagious that some West Indians who were involved in the practice began to have a pessimistic view as well (Bilby 153). NGI is a one point two billion dollar investment by the U.S. federal government. It will take a total of ten years for NGI to be fully activated. NGI is divided into six different stages, which are ten-print processing, RISC, national palm repository and latent searches,facial recognition and Rap Back,Iris recognition, and Tech refresh.
Social Security is a major social program that provides benefits to multiple groups of people within the United States. These benefits include payments for pensions, disability, and unemployment compensation just to name a few. Law enforcement uses several methods to solve all types of crimes. Having a variety of ways to help solve an investigation gives officials an advantage. If one method fails or isn’t helpful, there are several others they can rely on. For instance, if there are no physical witnesses to a crime, the criminal may have left a fingerprint at the crime scene. An individual’s fingerprint is unique, “no two persons have exactly the same arrangement of ridge patterns” (“Fingerprint ID”). Fingerprints of criminals and of civilians are collected and stored. Also, “People who apply for government jobs, jobs that handle confidential information, banking jobs, teaching jobs, law enforcement jobs, and any job that involves security issues can be fingerprinted” (“The First ID”). Fingerprints are processed within hours and minutes through the Integrated Automated Fingerprint ID System. This system was developed in 1991, and made it easier for different law enforcement agencies to store and share fingerprints.
