A couple of weeks ago, Papa John’s officially announced a multi-year sponsorship with Major League Baseball becoming the “Official Pizza of Major League Baseball”. Papa John’s is activating this sponsorship in a way that is makes both parties’ mouths water. In this unique sponsorship activation, Papa John’s is offering 40% off their pizza the day following every grand slam hit in the MLB this season (Forbes). This deal is as former Seattle Mariners announcer Dave Neihaus would say, “a grand salami!” (or pepperoni or whatever topping you prefer). Papa John’s replaces Domino’s as the “big cheese” in the pizza industry of Major League Baseball sponsorships after Domino’s had a very unsuccessful activation of their sponsorship with the MLB. Last season Domino’s gave out free pizza for the first two no-hitters of the year (which is already a rare occurrence) but to make matters worse, Domino’s did not issue free pizza to thousands of hungry baseball fans. Papa John’s has also done separate activations for these teams such as Astros1 which offers half-price pizza every time the Astros win (shows you how much confidence they had in the Astros) and my personal favorite Rangers7 which offers half-price pizza the day following a game in which the Rangers score 7 runs or more. I can personally speak to the effectiveness of these sponsorships. I have had Papa John’s pizza approximately 15 times in my life and at least 10 of those visits to Papa John’s were because of a sport-related sponsorship activation done by Papa John’s.
