Also, as seniors we have two seventh grade kids that we mentor. I do this because I remember how hard it was being a seventh grader and not really knowing much about high school. Once a week we sit down and talk with the children. I always love the stories they have to tell and I truly feel blessed when I can help with anything they are struggling with. My peer leader philosophy boils down to one word thing every leader, regardless of position, should be doing: being an epitome, that is setting the example. I write this as my fist point because I feel it is one of the most important aspects as a leader–never asking what you yourself is not willing to do. When a leader sets the example, it is easier for those under their tutelage to follow the leader and see the leader as someone who they strive to be. As a peer leader for an APSU 1000 one of the subjects that could be presented, is the importance of going to class and doing well in those classes. If I am telling students to always be on time, ask questions in class, and get to know your professors, I should be doing those things.

As a person who is for the most part uncomfortable with change, it is important that I find ways be a leader in a world that is ever changing. In order to be the best and most prepared leader as possible, it is necessary to be aware of one’s core identity and the values, talents, and strengths that are included in this. Consistent with the indications of Vaill’s term, “permanent white water”, the tendency of the world to change is unavoidable and “continual”. We as leaders must find ways to adapt and acclimate ourselves to these situations.
