Overivew of the Same Sex Marriage Debate
In today's rapidly growing society, current social issues and family morals are constantly changing the dynamics and aspects of individuals. One constant issue that has been a topic of discussion in the last decade has been marriage of the same sex. There are many people who support this idea, as well as people are against the concept. Same-sex marriage has been an issue today. Some people argue that the Constitution of marriage is intended to bond one male and one female, that the definition of marriage makes the same-sex marriage improper because same sex marriage keeps children from learning proper roles. It will negatively impact future family structure.
Psychological, children develop proper techniques and values to be successful in life from their parents or authoritative figures. With improper marriage of the same-sex, an individual that's a child would have psychological confusion and turmoil of whether his family is as normal and structured as their peers or others. With this constant confusion as the child develops into adulthood, they are 38% more likely to continue the pattern of same-sex marriage according to brondonvogt.com/marriage. This will only develop the trend of same-sex marriage across America and disrupt the childhood of many adolescents.
Morally, same-sex marriage activists argue that their marriage is a civil rights issue similar to the struggle of racial ideology in the 1960s. However, this concept is false. First of all, sexual behavior and race are essentially two different realities. A man and a woman wanting to marry may be different and their characteristics as far as color, ethnic background, short, tall, wealthy or poor, but none of these differences acts...

Same sex marriage may seem, to some, a crazy idea as marriage in this country is built on the foundation of a man and a woman marrying, but Sullivan points out that until recent centuries marriage was a contract into which a woman entered so that she would be controlled by her husba...
Discrimintaion and equality in society is faced amongst people every day. One certain subject that seems to get most of this attention is whether or not homosexual couples should be able to adopt. Same sex couples should be able to adopt children for many reasons. Children that are raised by same sex parents are predominantly taught to be more open minded, have a greater sense of tolerance, and are thought of to be role models for equality in relationships and life. Most would say that these children will face issues regarding their parents sexual orientation, but this is not so. Children of same sex parents have studied to show very few differences in achievement, mental health, and social function as a child that is raised in a heterosexual household. Same sex parents will allow their child to express themselves through different talents and other attributes that there child seems to be indulged in. These children are often showing more loving, nurturing ,and outgoing behaviors that is exposed to them through gay parenting.
Marriage is the legal or formally recognized union of a man and a woman, or two people or the same sex as partners in a relationship. Marriage rates in the United States have changed drastically since the last 90’s and early 2000 years (Cherlin 2004). Marital decline perspective and marital resilience perspective are the two primary perspectives and which we believe are the results from the decline. The marital decline perspective is the view that the American culture has become increasingly individualistic and preoccupied with personal happiness (Amato, 2004). The change in attitudes has changed the meaning of marriage as a whole, from a formal institution
Another concern is that if homosexual parents get another child of their same gender that the child will be sexually abused but same sex parents view their children in the same way heterosexual ones do. The risk is no higher than with heterosexual parents. Another argument is that the child will not develop right psychologically but to say this is saying that homosexuality is a mental disorder which according to the DSM- V it is not (Reekers 343). It is a possibility that some of these studies that support same sex parenting are flawed because they are so new. Same sex marriage ten to fifteen years ago wasn’t as prevalent as it is today. There are very few studies and it is hard to get parents to agree for psychologist to pry into their private lives for something that may or may not be proven (Meezan 97).
In today’s society, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community has been more accepted then in years prior, especially in the 1960’s and years prior to that, when anyone in the LGBT community would be horribly ridiculed, if not tortured. However, there still lies a long road for the LGBT community, as it pertains to human rights, equality, and particularly, marriage equality. Each individual has their own perception on marriage equality, whether it is based on moral basis, or on a humanistic (humane) basis, which is the belief of not denying anyone the right to be who they are, and therefore love who they love. However, as a society, we must examine the facts, as well as ourselves, as we address the debate for marriage equality for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community.
-If gay marriage is legal, it will be taught in the schools. Children's textbooks will explain the doctrine that the associations that homosexualists have indicated and that homosexuality is normal. It will also be taught that children should experiment with their sexuality to discover that sex attracts them more and that the people who oppose homosexuality are intolerant. Of course each television series just as it is starting now that have its pair of homosexuals or lesbians with children.
“Although most schools have policies that prohibit anti-gay discrimination or harassment, only 30% offer any education regarding sexual and gender diversity and less than 30% of school districts provide training for teachers and staff regarding challenges facing LGBT student (Sue D. & Sue D., 2013, p.476).” Same sex marriages are prohibited in many states and there isn 't much literature on same-sex marriages (p. 477). Adoption can be challenging in some states (p. 477). Research has shown that children raised by same sex couples are mentally healthy, the same as being raised by heterosexual couples. Counselors should be aware of their own bias and believes when it comes to same sex marriages, raising families (p.
One of the biggest issues going to debate throughout not only the U.S. but the world is the gay rights movement. The Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender (LGBT) community is being denied their basic rights as citizens just because of their sexual preference and the opinion of people throughout the country. Many Christians believe that homosexuality is wrong and that God is against it but others believe that God creates everything for a reason and that He loves everything equally. Even though many people believe that homosexuality is a sin and that it’s unnatural and wrong, homosexuals are ordinary people and they should be given their full rights regardless of their sexual orientation.
We live in a very controversial time when it comes to same sex marriages. This issue is one of the most widely discussed controversies along with what rights they deserve and what rights they should be denied. Straight people have very opposing beliefs on this topic, some believe gays are given far too few rights and should be granted ultimate freedom while others believe gays already have enough rights and the debate should end now. This is why our nation is so at war with this issue. The research found explains if marital and family status influence same sex marriages, gay rights, laws on marriage, the strength of gay marriage, and how the government is working to expand gay marriage rights.
This article tells about how gay marriage and same-sex have always been an issue but now that the government people are voicing their opinion to make the world a better place for everyone. June 26, 2015 was the biggest day in the history for same-sex couple because that when the Supreme Court ruled that “gay marriage is a right protected by the US Constitution in all 50 states” (Citiation). This article gives the liberal side of gay marriage in comparison to the conservative side. The number one pro of the legalization of gay marriage is “denying some people the option to marry is discriminatory and creates a second class of citizens” (Citiation). Even with splitting people up based on who they want to marry and be with is like creating another class of people the United States is not equal in many other situations so by making another class because you want to be different should not be an issue. Another pro and con about gay marriage is, “same-sex couples should have access to the same benefits enjoyed by heterosexual married couples”; marriage should not define a person with what benefits they have if they are straight or gay if a person is happy with the same gander as them than why is that an issue. I think this website give great example of each side and do not favor one side more than the
Since the 1970s, studies on the effect of same-sex parenting on children have been conducted in the United States. Sociological debates have occurred from the idea of allowing same-sex couples to parent. Some groups feel that allowing this would undermine the traditional ideology of marriage and skew the perception of gender roles for their children. Sociologists continue to produce empirical research that studies samples of the approximately 125,000 same-sex couples raising nearly 220,000 children and comparing their roles as parents and the adult personalities of their children to children raised by heterosexual couples. Current scientific research comparing the outcomes of children raised by gay or lesbian parents with children of heterosexual parents consistently shows that same-sex parents are just as capable of raising “psychologically healthy and well-adjusted” children as heterosexual parents. Research comparing children raised by same-sex couples and heterosexual couples found no differences in the adjustment or mental health of these children as adults.
Marriage is a “socially recognized and approved union between individuals, who commit to one another with the expectations of a stable and lasting intimate relationship. It begins with a ceremony known as a wedding which formally unites marriage partners. A marital relationship usually involves some kind of contract, either written or specified by tradition, which defines the partners’ rights and obligations to each other, to any children they may have, and to their relatives. In most contemporary industrialized societies, marriage is certified by the government,” (Skolnick, 2005). Marriage is also an important institution because of the impact it has on society. Marriage is the main way that reproduction of human life occurs. In some societies it is tradition for family heirlooms or things of value be passed on through marriage. Marriage also serves as a healthy way to have intimate relationships with an individual. In most places a marriage exists between two people of the opposite sex. However, the legal definition of marriage is currently being challenged by many. According to Skolnick’s article a marriage can be defined by responsibilities that a couple would share, some examples are: living together, having sexual relations, sharing money and financial responsibilities, and having a child together. The issue is that homosexual couples can do these things like heterosexual couples.
Research has already shown parent sexual orientation has no significant effect on children’s psychological adjustment in Wainright, Russell, and Patterson (2004) as well as Rivers, Poteat, and Noret (2008). There has been a stereotype that a man and a women should raise a child and if not the child would be “confused” about gender behavior, identity and sexual orientation. Wainright, Russell, and Patterson (2004) study has shown that parental sexual orientation has no effect of adolescent romantic attractions and behaviors. The results of their study show that children of same sex parents have a significant relationship quality. There was no significant difference in children’s’ general role behavior, children’s sexual orientation, gender identity, children’s’ cognitive development and psychological adjustment. Having same sex parents has no impact on a child’s gender role behavior, sexual orientation, gender identity, cognitive development and psychological adjustment. Having a same-sex parent has no impact on a child but rather the relationship that the child has with the parent no matter the parent’s sexual orientation. The relationship between the parent and the child s what can
... made groups of people have a very hostile attitude toward the subject matter. The traditional view of marriage is also important because it influences future generations and teaches children the meaning of the special union of a man and a woman. Many people also argue that when raising a child he or she should be raised by a father and a mother. Not both of the same sex. Although the debate of same-sex marriage may not affect some people, this is a hot topic that has changed the opinion of many people around the world. The topic of same-sex marriage is a subject that needs to be discusses by individuals who are certain of what they stand for and are capable of providing others with true and convincing arguments.
In conclusion I argue that banning same-sex marriage is discriminatory. It is discriminatory because it denies homosexuals the many benefits received by heterosexual couples. The right to marriage in the United States has little to do with the religious and spiritual meaning of marriage. It has a lot to do with social justice, extending a civil right to a minority group. This is why I argue for same-sex marriage. The freedom to marry regardless of gender preference should be allowed.
