I can feel the lactic acid forming in my burning leg muscles as my worn down running shoes hit the pavement and that fire soon travels to my gasping lungs. It is easy to want to succumb to the overwhelming internal desire to slow down and bring relief to the immense physical pain. This, however, does not happen. In fact, I speed up. This is because running is not truly about beating your competitors. It is about overcoming that voice inside of your head that is telling you to give up. The challenges and pains that I have had to overcome because of my life in the cross-country community has transformed my life and significantly altered the definition of who I am as a person.
