1.0 Introduction
Individuals when questioned on the period of life that they wish to go back; the answer would definitely be their childhood. Intelligent Life magazine mentioned that this is because childhood is the best time of a person’s life (2011). A child has very few responsibilities and commitment compared to an adult. Children in the childhood period do not even have to think or worry about paying utility bills, doing house chores or earning for the family. Children can enjoy carrying out their favorite activities during free time. The writer recollects her childhood experience as the most memorable duration in her 23 years of life. However, not every child would experience their childhood alike the writer. Some children would never want to ever look back at their childhood as it would have been the darkest period of their life.
There are several aspects that shape children experience of childhood, such as environmental factors, biological factors and interpersonal relationship which includes parenting aspects. From the writer’s perception, environmental factors, mainly speak about the child surrounding while biological factors include everything about gender, physical and mental health of child and the upbringing of a child. Based on the writer’s understanding, interpersonal relationship is children relationship or communication with others. The writer chooses to focus and discuss the parenting and environmental factor that shape child’s experience of childhood throughout the essay.

Growing up, two group of people, parents, and grandparents, took the time and the energy to raise me. Both of them had different approaches when raising me. These approaches were different parenting styles. According to Baumrind, parenting style was the “[capturing] normal variations in parents’ attempts to control and socialize their children” (Darling, 1999). To put it simply, parenting style goal was to lecture, influence, and discipline a child. In general, there are four parenting styles with their own specific benefits and disadvantages. Furthermore, parenting style, granted the dynamic of the family was understood, can be identified in families.
Parenting is one of the things in life where there is not a rulebook and there are a lot of beliefs on how to raise children. Parents tend to raise their children based on their childhood experiences whether they were good or bad. Some parents raise their children just like they were raised and some raise their children differently because they don’t agree with the way their parents raised them. Parenting styles are based on the ideals and beliefs parents have about raising their children. Research shows that parenting styles directly affect how children behave in and out of school. Parenting styles refer to a set of different manners in which parents raise their children. There are four parenting styles including authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved parenting. The authoritarian parenting style is based on the implementation of rules, and on the idea that all rules should be followed without exceptions. Similarly, authoritative parenting style implements rules, but the child feelings are taken in consideration and reasonable exceptions to the rule are allowed. On the other hand, in permissive parenting style, there is implementation of rules, but they are rarely encouraged to be followed. Nowadays, parents only want what is best for their children and their parenting styles plays a crucial role in the development of children which will in the long run, not only effect the child’s childhood years, but later prolong into their adult life as well.
Social constructionism gives meaning to phenomenon in social context and connections between culture and society build up realities in their circumstances. The studies of this idea have been conducted more than thirty years by a number of North American, British and continental writers (Burr, 1995). However, in childhood studies this notion appears later on. It is mostly held universally, childhood is a stage that biologically existing in human life in early years. It should be considered this childhood is constructed in the society. As a social being, it brings into the mind the relationship between society and child, inevitably. However, the dominant understanding of childhood attributes biological and social development, as figurative symbols of developmental progress (James&Prout, 1997), but rediscovery of childhood in sociology is reviewed children as social constructions rather than dependent and passive natural category (Corsaro, 1997). Prout and James (1997, p. 8) gives key properties for future of developments in childhood sociology which points “childhood is understood as a social construction and appears as a specific structural and cultural component of many societies”.

We have four styles that represent a parent’s chosen method to raise their children. Moreover, just when you think you know someone’s personality, they become a parent, who demonstrates headship; one would have never had predicted for that person.
Parenting, which is somewhat akin to teaching, should be regarded as one of the three cooperative arts. Thus conceived, it calls upon parents to assist their offspring in the process of growing up, doing so by observing carefully the steps the children themselves take in the process and doing what is necessary to facilitate their progress. Parenting departs from being a cooperative art, as teaching does also, when it tries to be the active and dominant factor in the process -- when parents or teachers think that what they do should be like the molding of passive, plastic matter.
Parents play a major role in shaping children’s lives because of how they decide to raise their children. Starting from the very early age, it’s the parents that teach their children what is wrong and what is right. The essay is considering the background that social relation flourishes, namely interaction child – adult and peer relations. Through their early experiences with others, children develop their understanding of the world. By simple activities that are carried out on daily basis between children and caregivers, children are able to gain the meaning of new techniques and learning strategies, they expand their existing knowledge and experience new things. The interesting aspect is to elaborate on social interaction within different groups of children. Although the cognitive abilities may not fully develop in every child, social interaction encourages and prompts the progress.
Childhood is the most unforgettable period of my life. Everyone has childhood memories. My childhood memories took place in Eritrea. These memories that are happiest and saddest memories are still in my mind. Sometimes I remember things that have happened in my childhood period and they just make me laugh. Childhood memories can be bad or good, but we can’t forget them. For these reasons, childhood memories are the most important parts of my life. Specifically, also I have some good memories of childhood.
