Outliers are extraordinary individuals who didn’t need college to be successful in the first place. In the past it was an honor to go to college, and only the wealthy families were able to send their kids. Outlier. An outlier is someone who is not considered to be a normal person within society. They have qualities that most people do not obtain. They are the most successful of individuals and many aspire to be them. Michael Jackson is the epitome of what I believe is a true outlier. In his best-selling novel, Malcolm Gladwell stated that we tend to spend more time looking at individuals success rather than looking at things that ultimately contributed to that success, such as their family, birthplace, and even birth date.

One of the richest people of the world, Mark Zuckerberg exemplifies heroic character, not attributed to fame and fortune, but his ability to utilize his success to impact others. The ideas presented in Outliers are surprisingly aligned with my own. It makes sense to me that a person’s success isn’t all about ability and his or her individual merit. In the past I have reflected upon my successes to find that I was not alone while achieving them. I have been given tremendous opportunities in life. The opposing side believes that people would be better prepared for life if they either went directly to the working field after high school or to a trade school instead of a college or university. One reason they disagree with college is because college does not ensure job readiness. As a result of this they state that a great deal of students who enroll in college do not actually graduate. According to a study done by Complete College America in Texas, of every 100 students who enrolled in a public college, 79 started at a community college, and only 2 of them earned a two-year degree on time; even after four years, only 7 of them graduated. Of the 21 of those 100 who enrolled at a four-year college, 5 graduated on time; after eight years, only 13 had earned a degree.” Another main reason that they oppose college is because tuition rates have risen quicker than income and so it is even more difficult for students to graduate debt free. An outlier is someone or something that is situated away from a main body and is statistically different in value from others in a sample. Outliers are all around us. We just don’t realize it. I know I didn’t even think about how other people are successful before I read Outliers. Many people find things that they have had all their lives to benefit them in ways they couldn’t even think about. They might have even thought about them as being a hindrance, like being Jewish or having ADHD. Sometimes the things that cast us out of a group can make us successful, people just don’t realize it until they actually look for them.
With the first day of any core class there is a slight apprehension to what can be held within the semester ahead. The moment I stepped out of the classroom after the first day, I came to the realization this class was going to change me as a person. Through many readings, discussions, movies and personal opinion papers my values, knowledge, and future actions have both changed and strengthened. Three questions have been answered throughout the semester, Who am I? What do I know? and Based on what I know how should I act? Human behavior has enlightened me with issues that I can personally relate to and the effect has easily been the most beneficial compared to any other core class I have taken.
Having opportunities and advantages not readily available to others, being born at a time that enables you to take advantage of opportunities unavailable to those born before or after you, having parents engaged and involved in your effort to success, and the endurance to practice day in and day out makes an outlier. Innate talent is the cornerstone of any success story. But to truly understand one’s journey to success, you need to delve deeper to uncover the true aspects of their success. And in the process, maybe make a case for them as an outlier.
College is not the end of the journey. Students need to be reminded constantly that their learning will continue on into their careers and life. All the learning activities and assignments are simply a foundation for the skill of the lifelong learner. The instructor simply points them out and directs the student.
Over the course of this class I have pieced together many things about my own life that before went unnoticed. I am now able to see things in a bit of a different light. Now that I have been introduced to the realm of psychology I understand some of the reasons for behavior around me. I have learned that there is a reason for most everything and a lot of our behaviors and mental processes can be explained through psychology. Studies have been conducted for many years to try and pinpoint the source of our behavior and it is not something that most people think about every day. Having a better understanding of why we operate the way we do will help me to better understand myself and the others around me.
I have discovered a lot about myself in general and how to deal with many issues for myself and others. I learn to think more critical in the class and in the real world as well. This course has helped me overcome my fear of worrying. I was unsure of myself when I first start class, but I quickly learn to understand myself and other people behavior by looking at my own self first that meant on the inside and outside. I have always been goal-oriented and generally known what I want out of life. This course has helped me to know myself better. It has taught me a valuable skill that I can apply at work with the students and in the master’s degree program. I have found that I like online education, and I know that I can achieve my goals if I work hard enough. This class forced me to become more organized. Through the various assignments, I have mastered the use of technology. I learned to communicate through discussion question with my classmates and instructor.
