One’s environment shapes their aspirations and how they achieve them. The people you are surrounded by and the place you live greatly affect what you want out of life and how you attain it. Wes (the author) went to a private school and grew up with a stricter upbringing since he lived with his grandparents, while Moore (the convict) grew up with his mother and went to public school. Wes feels alienated since he’s going to a white school and lives in a non-white neighborhood. Moore, on the other hand, feels jealous of his brother’s pricey clothes (which he obtained from drug dealing). With both of these combine, it made Wes’s opportunities starting from a young age, very slim of being successful. Growing up, Wes Moore had his mom and family around him to support him and when things got bad, his mom sent him to military school as a disciplinary action. This saved Wes from further becoming a bad kid because there, he learned discipline and respect. On the other hand, the other Wes Moore was off selling drugs and doing other bad things while his only influence was his brother. The other Wes Moore was so involved in his profits from selling drugs that he even sold to a cop even though he knew that he was undercover (Moore 112). Wes took this chance because he was so desperate for the twenty dollars he was going to receive, he didn 't care what the consequences were. I believe that if the author Wes Moore never went to military school, that he would have turned out just like the other Wes Moore. Weich from Lincoln County Jail stated that when investigating the jail, inmate were forced to garden as their “hardwork” this was supposed to change them. In a person’s life, one must overcome obstacles that have the potential to either negatively or positively impact their future. Whether it is a serious obstacle, such as being involved with drugs, or a minor obstacle, such as procrastinating an important essay for the night before it is due, the choices people make can influence the way they live their lives. In Wes Moore’s inspiring non-fiction book, The Other Wes Moore, two boys with the same name start off living a few blocks away from one another, but turn out to be completely different individuals. At first, they were both troublemakers, getting in trouble with the law. However, as time progressed, the author, Wes Moore, became a Rhodes scholar and quite successful, while the other Wes Moore was sentenced to life in prison. The difference between these two men was the surrounding influences that shaped their growth as people. In a person’s growth, the most important factors are a positive role model in a positive environment because a positive role model will provide the path to success and will aid that person in achieving prosperity.
Why have the two boys, with the same name and grew up fatherless in the similar poverty-stricken neighborhoods, developed into two dramatically different individuals: a Rhodes Scholar and a convicted inmate? Rameck lived with his grandma and mother most of the time in Newark. he loved his grandma as his mother. But even that, his mother always wanted him to do good in the school. His neighborhood had a low class families and the gangs and drugs was introduces to that community. Despite his mother using drugs she still forced him to do well in school. Rameck sometimes helped his teacher Ms. Hatti doing work in her garden as way for him to earn a few bucks. Rameck started miss-behaving in class after he introduces to Private school because he was ahead of the class from things he learned at public schools Rameck soon got a car and started to visit his grandmother often and stay there on breaks from college. Rameck received a lot of her advices to him about his miss-behaving, but she did not understood that he had nothing to be proud of; his father in and out of the jail and his mother and father heroin user. Rameck’s grandmother lead him to see the reasons was around him in his friends, they were selling dope, robbing people and going to jail and they know that way would lead them to die, but they had no choice. Expectations influence who we become. Many factors come into play when we assess the lives of both Wes Moores introduced in the short novel The Other Wes Moore. Some of these factors are the expectations that shaped each man’s life. Moore illustrates his point when he writes, “The expectations that others place on us help us form our expectations of ourselves”(126). The explanation to the quote was it will help people to see the expectation of “thinking outside the box” means that think freely for themselves with better judgment in everyday life for their moral action in their society. Though they were raised in the same type of household both men had a choice: To either lead a life of drugs and possibly crime or walk away. Author Wes made the choice to stay away from drugs, while Inmate Wes chose to start dealing drugs that ended with a robbery and jail time. It is amazing to think that by making one decision, the roles could have easily been reversed.
One part of his story stood out the most to me. When he went to his grandma’s house with Tony and he saw his father lying on the couch. He ran up and approached him to only have his father not even recognize him and question “Who are you?”. Having your own father not even recognize him had to be traumatic and made him feel even more alone then ever. At such a young age, young Wes is not even sure who he is and it is a father’s job to teach his young son how to be a good man. Baltimore Wes Moore (the criminal) was only a product of his environment and it was inevitable that he lived the life he did and will sit in jail for the rest of his life. He could only react to what he was brought up in. Environment plays an important role in everyone’s life. I am not a strong believer in luck, I believe that you can make your own luck, and the harder you work the luckier you will become. Some may think the difference between the two Wes’s is that Brooklyn Wes (the author) was just luckier than Baltimore Wes. I don’t believe this to be the case at all. Brooklyn Wes was taken out of the hostile environment and put into an environment that expected more of him. Baltimore Wes was just left to believe that this is who he was to become. This book is telling a story about two African American boys (Wes A and Wes P) who have the same name and grew up at same community, but they have a very different life. The author, Wes A, begins his life in a tough Baltimore neighborhood and end up as a Rhodes Scholar, Wall Streeter, and a white house fellow; The other Wes Moore begins at the same place in Baltimore , but ends up in prison for the rest of his life. Then why do they have the same experience, but still have a totally different life? I will agree here that environment (family environment, school education environment and society environment) is one of the biggest reasons for their different.

Gang violence and murder are two factors that contribute to the delinquency that develops in young boys and girls. Violence is seen among juvenile delinquency, where teenagers are victims of violence that exists around their neighborhood or violent acts their peers around them commit. Violence exists in poor neighborhoods where juveniles do not have any money or jobs and leads to them becoming thieves. Caine is a young man that is surrounded by violence and drugs, where he becomes a delinquent due to him growing up in a dangerous neighborhood and being part of a group where his peers murder and steal.
