Their mission, according to their 990 tax form is to protect our watersheds and coastal oceans for the benefit of California sea otters and humans through science-based policy and advocacy. The Otter Project trains members of the general public to observe and collect unbiased data on coastal and marine activities in marine protected areas . …show more content…
The data gathered by volunteers is meant to inform the management, enforcement, and science of California's marine protected areas (MPAs). By involving local communities in this important work, MPA Watch programs inspire and empower stewardship, and educate citizens about California's ocean ecosystems. (“mpawatch.org” n.d.)
Members of The Otter project are making a difference not only in their community but also in ocean protection. While The Otter Project is directed toward the benefit of the California sea otter there are handful of other volunteer organizations that are working toward the similar goals. Organizations such as Heal the Bay, WiLDCOAST, and West Marin Environmental Action Committee are all working toward the protection of our coastal
The amazing part about the steps being taken to try to save the Chesapeake Bay is how much scientists and people who carry out legislation in the local and state governments are working together to try and create policies on businesses and people to
The Sea Shepherds are group of volunteers who try to protect the sea animals, and capture criminals who kill the animals without permits. Their website has many purposes, one dedicate to collect donations from the reader. Furthermore, they want to protect the ocean wildlife. The website audience includes people who want to protect the ocean, and they want to save the sea animals which will likely be extinct. They offer the audience a chance to donate, volunteer, and stay up to date with ongoing issues involving marine life. This website is outstanding because the sea shepherds host a successful website that effectively reaches out to the audience through appealing to the reader's emotions, logic, and credibility.
The efforts taking place through different conservation organizations and the State of Florida are making a mixed impact on the survival of Manatees and Sea Turtles. The decline in manatee population has decreased, but due to low reproduction rates, more needs to be done to avoid extinction. The sea turtle outlook is more species specific. Some species of turtle are seeing stabilization in population, while others are not. The State of Florida has a large array of custom license tags that support the conservation efforts taking place within the State. The proceeds go to benefit the local marine life in Florida. With financial resources, state and local cooperation, and through constant research and observation, we are able to learn more about both of these gentle animals. With human awareness of those living in Florida, these two animals will survive

Being a responsible citizen of the planet can do a lot to protect the environment, and that includes the ocean and its coral reefs.
The Chesapeake Bay plays host to an astonishing amount of plant and animal life, providing much of our fish intake for species that aren’t being overfished. For the species that are being overdrawn, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation is working to restore the populations, and it’s going well thus far. Another theme that is endangering the marine life populations as well as the health of the human population is the massive amount of polluti...
We, as humans, need to take action, be accountable for our oceans and prevent the waste we produce from entering our waters. On a daily basis, thoughtless men, women, and children are polluting our waters and killing our marine life.
Unobstructed views of the Pacific’s vibrant blue water, unfilled wetlands, open-access to beaches, and agricultural lands that remain untouched are all attributes that make up the iconic, beautiful, and diverse California Coast. The protection and land-use decisions throughout the entirety of the California Coastal Zone is entrusted to the California Coastal Commission (CCC), which is widely considered one of the most powerful land-use authorities in the country.
1 The sea otter is endangered because of oil spills in 1977. Tons of otters where hurt and were sent to the Marine Mammal. Under state law, southern sea otters are "fully protected" mammals. Southern Sea Otters are one of the smallest marine animals. Their fur is thick but soft when dry but in cold waters the thickness keeps them warm. The thing they eat are sea urchins, abalone, mussels, clams, crabs, snails and at least 40 other marine species. 2 Sea otters exhibit numerous adaptations which help them survive in their challenging marine environment. Long whiskers help them to detect vibrations in murky waters. Did you know that the sea otter is part of the weasel family and is the second biggest? Mating happens all throughout the year. Sea
Why can’t we shoot/trap the American River Otter? It is a animal with a very expensive fur. Their fur is the most dense fur on earth, for example, they have about one million hairs per square inch on their fur, which is because they have no blubber to keep themselves warm. Some cool facts about the otter are, that they can live their whole lives without getting out of the water. In other words, it does not get tired of swimming. Some reasons why we want to get rid of them are; the otter has been eating all the fish we like to catch. Some examples are, Crayfish, Salmon, and Trout. Another reason is the Otter has been eating all the water fowl. Some cool waterfowl are, Geese, Ducks, and their eggs. Reason

A third threat to the sea otter populations is predation from killer whales. It was observed that in certain areas of Alaska many sea otter populations had been decreasing since the early 1990s. Killer whale predation is believed to be cause of their decline for the following reasons. The first line of reasoning being, an increased number of sightings of attacks on sea otters by killer whales. The first attack was reported in 1991, but since then an additional nine attacks had been reported. From this it was determined that killer whales had been preying on sea otters, since the probability of actually seeing an attack in such a large area was extremely low and a number of attacks had already been seen. Second, it was observed that in areas occupied by killer whales, sea otter populations have been decreasing; whereas in areas inaccessible to killer whales, sea otter populations were constant. Lastly, by extrapolating the number of sea otters that have been killed by killer whales based on the decreasing population rate and comparing it to the observed number of attacks. The results showed that the estimated number, 5.05, was very similar to the observed number, 6, of killer whale attacks over a 6-year period (Estes, et al., 2016). It is estimated that in the Alaskan Aleutian Islands, 40,000 sea otters have been consumed by killer whales; a 95 percent reduction in the population (Garshelis and Johnson, 2013).
In the world where people live in is an enormous responsibility but also the greatest gift that people need to cherish and protect. The human race needs to step up and voice not only their concerns, but the concerns of all the animals endangered or not. Any species which fall into the categories vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered are considered to be at risk of extinction. {Robert Redford} said “I think the environment should be put in the category of our national security defense of our resource’s because it’s just as important as defense abroad otherwise what is there to defend?”
The Wildlife Conservation Society is a widespread organization that mission is to protect and preserve the wilderness. They protect any type of wild animal that is near extinction or in any kind of danger. Although their major goal is to protect all wildlife that needs it, they know education is the first step into succeeding. The more people that are educated on the world’s problems, the more people will start to get involved and help out in any way they can. Knowing this, they also try and educate people on the major problems that are currently going on in the world. They have programs, all around the globe, that people can go to, so they can get taught on what they can do to help. This all started when the organization was created in 1895. Andrew Green, Theodore Roosevelt, and Henry Fairfield all had a close connection with the creation of this organization. The organization’s first name was the New York Zoological Society and influenced the fields of wildlife conservation, the study of zoology, and the creation of wild parks. Their first park is known as the Bronx Zoo and it was created in 1899. This Zoo was a great success because of it’s size and variety of wildlife exhibited. It is known as the world’s largest zoo in a city and represents more than five hundred species from around the world. The zoo has mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, and insects that anyone can go visit. The success this park had was the main reason for the organization to create four more wildlife parks in New York, that are visited by millions every year. Although they are only located in New York, these zoo’s are visited by millions of people from different parts of the world.
The establishment of the Marine Park system will provide a place of refuge for marine animals and improve their overall living conditions. This is because marine parks have specific rules preventing the exploitation of species, over-fishing and boating pollution, enabling marine life to become more plentiful and the individual organisms to increase in health and size. The diversity of the organisms will also increase, as will the overall biomass of the sea life. There is proof of this on Rottnest Island, WA. The density of lobsters was ’34 times higher in the sanctuary… than in other areas around the island wh...
