The Otter Project, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public charity incorporated in Monterey California that was founded in 1988 in Monterey California. (“Facebook” n.d.) The organization’s staff, according to the official Otter Project website, includes chief executive, Steve Shimek and program associate Heather Cauldwell, while Sarah Damron, Robert Ketley, and Debbie Sivas compose the board of directors.(“otterproject.org/who-we-are/board”n.d.) Their mission, according to their 990 tax form is to protect our watersheds and coastal oceans for the benefit of California sea otters and humans through science-based policy and advocacy. The data gathered by volunteers is meant to inform the management, enforcement, and science of California's marine protected areas (MPAs). Members of The Otter project are making a difference not only in their community but also in ocean protection.
