The case study we are working on is about an older female who has fallen and fractured her right hip bone. The patient had to undergo a surgical procedure due to the extent of the break and is now healing. Although they have fixed the problem she is still at risk for osteoporosis, and should take all steps necessary to avoid this issue. Margaret is at risk for osteoporosis for many reason, a few examples would be her age and gender. Age plays a factor because as we age the bones start to become weaker. Gender also plays a role in this because women have less bone tissue than men, and loss bone at a faster rate due to menopause. There have been a few studies that show placing the patient on certain medications can be a good treatment for osteoporosis. Some of those medications include Calcium supplements, Estrogen, and Zoledronate. Calcium is vital in bone architecture and is required for deposition of bone minerals. The bone is where calcium is stored and then later on released when needed. Since calcium plays a major role in the process of bone formation it only makes since to place the patient on this supplement to help the bone growth and form as it should (McKinley, O’Loughlin, & Bidle 2016). Although calcium is something the body requires, one should be careful with taking this supplement because studies have shown that too large of an intake of calcium could actually effect the body in the opposite way (Papaioannou, A., Santesso, N., Morin, S. N., Feldman, S., Adachi, J. D., Crilly, R., 2015). Studies have shown that the most efficient way to deal with the problem is to maintain a healthy life style including eating healthy and getting plenty of exercise, other ways have shown that putting patients on medication have seemed with help slow down the process of osteoporosis and work in a way to strengthen the bone again. There have been controversial issues with some of the drugs being used because almost every drug that is used in a treatment has some sort of side effect, some worse than others. Most studies have not been carried out in a long-term period because of this problem. Before trying any of these treatments the patient should consult with their doctor to make sure the medication is the right for that person. Millions of people all over the world suffer from this issue, as technology’s grows more and more treatments are putting studies. Hopefully in the near future one will be able to find a treatment to avoid osteoporosis, or completely treat the patients who are already
