Osmosis Investigation Planning: Introduction: We have been asked by the teacher to do an experiment on osmosis and the aim of this experiment is that we want to know the affect of osmosis on a potato at different concentration. Prediction: I predict that if the potato has got more sugar particles than the sugar concentration then potato will absorb sugar particles from the sugar concentration and this will decrease the mass of the potato. If the concentration has got more sugar particles than potato then potato will loose its particles inside it and its mass will decrease. Preliminary results: Amount of concentration Time Initial mass (G) Final mass(g) thickness %change % difference 0.0 10 hrs 3.484 3.937 3 cm 88.49 % -11.51 0.25 10 hrs 4.784 4.685 3 cm 102.11 % 2.11 0.50 10 hrs 4.651 4.379 3 cm 106.21 % 6.21 0.75 10 hrs 4.750 4.139 3 cm 114.76 % 14.76 1.0 10 hrs 4.718 4.071 3 cm 115.89 % 15.89 [IMAGE] When we done the preliminary results in our class using a science investigation programme in computer I got the above results which is completely different from the results that I got when I did the actual experiment. So this means that we did something wrong while doing the experiment. Scientific knowledge: Osmosis is the movement of water particles from a high concentration to a lower concentration along concentration gradients through a partially permeable membrane. If the potato has got more sugar particles than the concentration then the potato will absorb the particles from the concentration this is because the quantity of the particles inside the potato is more than
