The highly competitive and dynamic business world that we live in today is dictated by human behavior. Very successful managers and CEO’s don’t just crunch numbers and create products that make them millions of dollars. Organizational and human behaviors are key concepts to being successful in the business world. Look at it from a different perspective, what type attitude from a manager works best with a sales team? Or how come workers different social perception can positively affect his or her performance. One man who used human behavior to help determine and develop modern business is Peter Drucker, widely regarded as the father of modern management. In the corporate world, the best way to explain motivation is Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. This hierarchy involves five categories, physiological needs, safety, love, esteem, and self-actualization (Nelson, D, Quick 74). Think of these needs as essentials to life, food, water, etc. Each level is a necessity and each level is used as motivation. Once a level is met, the next level is your motivation. Drucker explains that in the future customers are going to want more from businesses. He mentions, “Customers have moved up on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, and are seeking fulfillment and service rather than other material product (Edersheim 91).” Using your customer’s motivation is a perfect way to stay ahead of the changes in the business world. For example my summer job is painting houses, one way I can increase the performance of my business is taking into consideration what motivates my customers. Motivation, personality, and performance are important concepts when looking at ones behavior. Drucker mentions, “People are the business (Edersheim 216).” Many bystanders look at people as just pieces to a puzzle, all they do for the business is make products, pick up the phone, and record numbers, which is completely wrong. The business runs on the people inside of it. The CEO at the top is the motivator and sets the personality that runs through his managers and employees. Besides controlling material items, the manager has to understand the behaviors of the employees. They have to have healthy relationships, positive attitudes, and lastly the managers have to give feedback on their performance.
