Nutrients from food are vital to human performance in the daily activities that they partake in. There is a diet that follows a lifestyle of receiving plentiful nutrients and it may be hard to fulfill when a lot of foods are injected with all types of harmful or non-beneficial substances. Those kind of foods are labeled as “conventional” foods which contrasts from organic products. The technology available today coincides with agriculture to help produce the best quality food for the average consumer. It’s the reason that the organic label is seen on food products in which all consumers should take advantage of because not only does it provide the most for your daily nutrients, but organic products help nurture the environment to keep a healthy earth.
Organic Foods in America Recent years, more and more people start choosing organic food. Organic foods are “the way agricultural products are grown and processed” (Organic Foods). Organic foods often have a lot of requirements. For example, organic crops need to grown in safe soil and has to be separate from conventional products. More than that, farmers cannot use synthetic pesticides (organic foods).Which means organic foods often have a lot of requirements on growing it.
Organic farmers do use pesticides and it is economically difficult not to do so. The forgoing of synthetic pesticides leaves organic farmers using more harmful natural alternatives. Unless a person buys straight from the farm, organic food profits are not going to small farmers. Be informed; look for the certified organic label and follow-up with the USDA Organic Agriculture. The USDA has a list of farms and the regulation along with the laws of labeled certified organic foods.
Surprisingly, the land used to raise and grown organic produce is positively affected by the lack of chemicals used. The Food and Agricultural Organization quantified, “It aims to produce food while establishing an ecological balance to prevent soil fertility or pest problems. Organic agriculture takes a proactive approach as opposed to treating problems after they emerge” (Par. 1). The natural balance in minerals and nutrients released from these foods has been linked to the enhancement of soil productivity, therefore producing more potassium, phosphate, calcium, magnesium.
In order for a product to be labeled as “organic”, they must meet several specific conditions and requirements. Consuming organic food will not only affect health, but also the existence of animals as well as the food resource and the environment. Organic food is grown in healthy soil that does not contain pesticides such as, fungicides, insecticides, and herbicides. In the books “Food Rules” by Michael Pollan, on the food rule number 30s, he states, “Eat well-grown food from healthy soil.” That explains, “…it is true that food certified organic is usually well grown in relatively healthy soil – soil nourished by organic matter rather than chemical fertilizers.” (Pollan67). Pesticides that being used in conventional products may still be able to tolerate by humans in low concentration.
Vegetarians tend to eat organic over non-organic food due to the antibiotics and chemicals farmers put into their crops. Vegetarian diets are healthier and will help maintain a good lifestyle for many reasons: promotes healthy weight and lifestyle, provides all nutrient needs, and reduces the use of antibiotics and chemicals on crops and animals. Healthier Lifestyle Arguably, being a vegetarian is the healthiest diet and promotes a better lifestyle for everyone who adopts this diet. Farmers that want to have their produce or animals to be “organic” They must meet all necessary rules and regulations made by the USDA (Untied States Department of Agriculture) and their farm must be inspected by a certified government inspector. The main differences between organic and conventional food is basically just the way that it is grown or handled by farmers.
