Consumers Union conducted a large-scale study on organic versus conventional foods. Researchers looked at data from more than 94,000 food samples, and 20 different crops (Wilcox np). They found that organically grown crops consistently had about one-third as a many pesticide residues as conventionally grown versions (Aubrey np). Organic foods also were far less likely to contain residues of more than one pesticide (Aubrey np). “If you’re talking about pesticides, the evidence is pretty conclusive. Your chances of getting pesticide residues are much less with organic food” says John Reganold, professor of soil science at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington (Wilcox np). Farming practices for organic food, avoid common time, and cost saving technologies available, by not using fertilizers and pesticides. Food that is organic costs more than conventional food, because of the organic certification fee, more workers are needed and there is a higher risk of low yields. Studies have proven that organic products are not healthier. They have similar nutritional values and any differences are not significant. Organic is often said to be safer because it does not use chemicals, but studies have also shown that after produce is washed conventional food is still safe for consumption. Organic products claim to be GMO free, but without the use of GMO’s the amount of food farmers are able to produce would not be near enough for our growing population. Advertising has an emotional appeal for organic products, because they convince that if you want what is best for your family you will buy the item with the least chemicals and dyes, but these items often have the same ingredients as conventional items. We should be not be worried if organic is better than conventional food.
