My inspiration for wanting to be an optometrist comes from two of the most important people in my life. My parents are a prime example of what type of person I aspire to become. My mother is a nurse and my father is a police officer. I have seen them make a difference in the community with their selflessness and hard work ethic. I would love to leave my own footprint in my community and I believe this can be achieved by becoming an optometrist. My parents contain all the characteristics that I admire and wish to take with me on my journey of becoming an optometrist.
Most of my experience in optometry has come through employment at Visionworks. My job was to help patients select frames and lenses that would best fit their needs. This included: recording their pupillary distances, segment heights, and ocular center heights. I also educated patients about the types of lenses, materials, and coatings for their glasses. I then transitioned to working at the in-house lab to manufacture the eyewear for our patients. This included: selecting the correct base curve for the prescription, calculating decentrations, surfacing, coating, and edging the lenses for the …show more content…

I also plan on having my own practice back in my hometown of Mission, Texas. I believe this will allow me to serve my community and help mentor young students who have an interest in optometry. In addition, sports are a huge deal to me so I plan to be involved in some form of sports vision research. I would also love to be affiliated with local schools or even the local NBA developmental team, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers as their team doctor. This also goes with my mentality to never stop learning, so I plan to attend trainings or conferences for advances in optometry. In the end my ultimate career goal is to continually strive to be the best optometrist I can
